A 10-year-old pupil has installed a model solar energy system using locally available materials after an educational field visit.

Inspired by what he observed during the visit, he used available local resources to replicate a solar installation during a hands-on practical session organized by Ecological Balance Cameroon.

The activity was carried out within the framework of our Talent Hunt Session, an integral arm of the Sustainable Education Program aimed at nurturing innovation, creativity, green talents, and practical environmental learning among children.

This experience demonstrates the power of engaging children to real-life climate solutions at a young age. They begin to see themselves not only as learners, but as future problem-solvers and environmental leaders.

At Ecological Balance Cameroon, we believe sustainable education should go beyond theory. It should inspire action, build confidence, and empower children to create solutions for a greener future using the available resources around them.

“Trespassing or carrying out illegal activities within protected catchment areas can lead to imprisonment ranging from 3 months to 10 years, or fines from 500,000 FCFA to 10 million FCFA,” — Divisional Delegate of Water and Energy, Nkambe.

This powerful statement was one of the key highlights from Eco Balance Cameroon’s recent radio programme aired on Nkambe Radio under the theme: “Empowering Communities for Sustainable Catchment Protection.”

The discussion highlighted environmental laws and water governance in Cameroon while raising awareness on the importance of protecting water catchments, restoring degraded lands, and strengthening community participation in conservation efforts across Nkambe, Binju, Binshua, and surrounding communities.
Listen to the attached audio/video extract to learn more about the laws guiding water catchment protection in Cameroon and why safeguarding our water sources is everyone’s responsibility.

We have now begun the demarcation of the River Bortoh riparian zone, marking another important milestone in our collective journey toward protecting and restoring this vital ecosystem.

What makes this process truly remarkable is the full participation and commitment of the community. Farmers, grazers, local authorities, and technical stakeholders are all working side by side to ensure that the riparian boundaries are clearly identified, respected, and protected for present and future generations.

This activity is strengthening community ownership of natural resources, reducing environmental degradation, protecting water resources, and promoting peaceful coexistence between livelihoods and nature.

The enthusiasm and collaboration demonstrated throughout this exercise continue to prove that sustainable environmental management is most effective when communities are placed at the center of action.

Together, we are laying the foundation for long-term ecosystem restoration, improved watershed protection, and a stronger community-led conservation framework for River Bortoh.

On Wednesday, April 29th, we organized an excursion with students from Atangana Islamic School, Nkambe, one of the five schools where we promote sustainable education, to a solar shop.

The aim of the excursion was to blend classroom learning with real-life experience, helping students understand solar energy as a key tool for environmental sustainability.

During the visit, the pupils observed how solar systems are installed and gained insight into their value and importance for both people and the environment.

Happy Labour Day!

Today, we celebrate all the incredible people who make change possible—our amazing team members, past and present, who have dedicated their time, energy, and passion to protecting our environment.

As we join the nation in commemorating Labour Day under the theme “Social Dialogue and Decent Work: A Factor for Peace, National Cohesion, and Economic Development,” we reflect on the power of working together, supporting one another, and building a future rooted in dignity and sustainability.

To everyone who has worked with us, supported us, and followed our journey, you are part of this story.

And to all workers everywhere, especially those making a difference in their communities, we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you.

Together, we continue building a more sustainable future. 💚

We have officially kicked off participatory mapping of River Bortoh and it has been an incredible show of community collaboration so far!

Together with local authorities, community members, representatives from the Divisional Delegations of Water & Energy, Environment, and Agriculture, the Nkambe Council, as well as farmers and grazers, we successfully mapped the entire river.

One of the most impactful outcomes of this exercise was the formation of a dedicated team of farmers and grazers, entrusted to work alongside stakeholders in driving the next critical phase: the demarcation of riparian zones.

This process continues to demonstrate the power of inclusive, community-driven approaches in environmental conservation and ecosystem restoration. It also sets the stage for developing a community-led conservation action plan and define our roadmap for sustainable impact.

We are proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited for what lies ahead!

Ecological Balance Cameroon is proud to announce a collaboration under the Ashoka Collaboration Fund, bringing together our Executive Director Limbi Tata , Junior Ashoka Fellow, and Farmer Tantoh, Senior Ashoka Fellow of the Farmer Tantoh Foundation, to restore a vital water catchment in Binshua, Nkambe.

As part of the first phase of this initiative, a community-led tree planting activity was successfully carried out, on April 4th, 2026, resulting in the planting of over 2,000 trees at a key water catchment site, with the active participation of more than 80 community members. The catchment, which serves as the main source of water for the village, was immediately secured through fencing to ensure its protection from intrusion and long-term sustainability.

In the second phase of the project, planned for later in the year, water catchment committee members will be trained in beekeeping and supported with tools to develop sustainable livelihoods that complement and reinforce conservation efforts. Through this collaboration, we continue to advance practical solutions that connect environmental protection with community wellbeing. Farmer Tantoh

Ecological Balance Cameroon has recently scaled up its plastic waste management efforts in Nkambe through the distribution of trash bins across the town, placing them in shops and at strategic locations to collect whiskey sachets. This effort is part of a growing initiative, launched last year, aimed at turning plastic waste into a practical solution for environmental restoration. These sachets are being recycled into polybags and are being used to raise tree seedlings in our nursery, contributing to both waste reduction and reforestation.

A survey conducted by the Ecological Balance Cameroon research team earlier this month has revealed that shops generate between 100 and 500 sachets weekly, with some producing up to 1,000 sachets per week. These findings have reinforced the urgent need to establish waste collection hubs directly at waste generation points, a system that is currently being implemented to improve collection efficiency and the reuse of plastic waste.

This intervention has come at a critical time as Nkambe, like many cities in Cameroon, has been facing increasing environmental challenges due to rapid urbanization and the rising consumption of single-use plastics such as sachets and bottled drinks. This situation has been worsened by limited awareness of sustainable waste management practices and persistent poor waste disposal behaviors. While efforts have been made by the council, they have not consistently reached all waste generators.

Through this initiative, Ecological Balance Cameroon has been closing the gap by transforming plastic waste into a valuable resource for reforestation and sustainable environmental management.

Restoration success is not only measured by the number of trees planted, but by the return of life within restored landscapes. Birds and insects play a critical role in revealing whether ecosystems are truly recovering. As bioindicators, they respond quickly to environmental changes, making them powerful and reliable indicators of ecosystem health and habitat quality. Their presence, abundance, and diversity provide a clear and natural way to assess whether restoration efforts are genuinely successful.

Ecological Balance Cameroon’s recently secured small research grant will, in the months ahead, enable the organization to better understand the impact of its restoration activities in the region, since 2023 and strengthen evidence-based restoration strategies. This will guide Eco Balance long-term goal of restoring over 36 hectares of degraded land in Nkambe.
