𝗙𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗗𝗘: 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗬 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗦 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗘 𝗔𝗖𝗧?

On August 28, we raised our voices against the alarming wave of feminicide in Cameroon.

Today, the concern is even more urgent, and 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.

Cameroon officially recorded 56 cases of feminicide in 2023, 67 in 2024, and approximately 77 in 2025. Then, in 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, 𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗙𝗙 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟱𝟬 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀. By September according to Cameroon Tribune, reports indicated that 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟭𝟮𝟬 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟳–𝟴 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸.

These are not just numbers. Behind every figure is a woman, a mother, daughter, sister, wife, or friend whose life mattered.

𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵.

Prevention means recognising warning signs early, breaking the silence, strengthening protection and referral systems, challenging harmful norms, and ensuring accountability.

𝗔𝘁 𝗩𝗖𝗙 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻, we believe the response must move beyond mourning after a life is lost. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹.

"𝗪𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵."

We are tired of meeting after another woman has been killed. Tired of condemning violence after the headlines fade. Tired of asking:

“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯?” when warning signs often existed long before the final act.

If we are serious about ending 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲, outrage alone is not enough.

This was the spirit behind a stakeholder planning meeting on actions against feminicide in the 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻, bringing together government ministries, CSOs, community leaders, women and youth leaders to ask a critical question:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆?

The goal was not another document for a shelf, but practical and coordinated action. Because no single institution can end feminicide alone.

Government has a role. Civil society has a role. Community leaders, families, women and youth leaders all have a role—and so does every one of us.

Our starting point is simple:

𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲.

We must identify risks earlier, strengthen referral and response systems, support survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, challenge harmful norms, and stop dismissing violence as a “family matter.”

The South West Region does not need another expression of outrage after the next death.

𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵.

That is the commitment we are taking forward.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

𝗔 𝗪𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗡𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗜𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗘 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗟𝗬!

The repeated reports of women being killed by their partners in Cameroon should disturb every one of us.

Femicide is not simply a family matter.
It is not a private dispute.
It is not a moment of anger that should be excused.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Every woman killed by a partner represents a failure somewhere, in prevention, in early intervention, in reporting, in protection, in access to services, or in holding perpetrators accountable.

We cannot continue to wait until a woman is dead before we ask what happened.

What must happen now?

√𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿.
Threats, stalking, controlling behaviour, repeated violence and escalating abuse must be taken seriously.

√𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Women experiencing violence need accessible, confidential and survivor-centred pathways to safety, psychosocial support, health, legal assistance and other appropriate services.

√𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.
Violence against women must have consequences. Silence and impunity can place more lives at risk.

√𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝘆𝘀.
Preventing femicide requires confronting harmful ideas about control, entitlement, masculinity and the use of violence in relationships.

√𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.
Families, neighbours, faith leaders, traditional authorities, community organizations, institutions and service providers all have a role in recognizing risk and responding appropriately.

And we need comprehensive laws on GBV and feminicide, we must strengthen the systems that connect these efforts so that a woman seeking help does not have to navigate protection alone.

Prevention must begin 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹. This requires comprehensive laws on GBV and Feminicide, sustained investment in community awareness, early identification, survivor-centred support, positive masculinity, accountable institutions and stronger referral and protection systems.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁!

We cannot bring back women whose lives have been lost.

But we can decide that the next warning will be taken seriously.
The next survivor will be believed.
The next report will receive a response.
The next community will act.

𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

THE SUBJECT WE NEVER TEACH.

Every school year, children learn Mathematics, English, Science, ICT and History. But who teaches them about safety?

Who teaches a child that their body belongs to them? How to recognize inappropriate touching, grooming or manipulation? How to say NO, speak up, and seek help—even when the person making them uncomfortable is someone they trust?

This is a gap we cannot afford to ignore.

Children should not have to experience abuse before learning how to recognize danger. Child protection, body autonomy, healthy relationships and help-seeking should be part of growing up, not lessons we offer only after harm occurs.

Parents, teachers, schools, communities and policymakers all have a role to play.

At VCF Cameroon, we believe safety is not an extra lesson. It is a life skill, and every child deserves to learn it.

Let's close the gap. Let's keep our children informed, heard and protected.

"What if the School Bag is Ready, but the Menstrual Hygiene Kit is Missing?"

For many girls, going back to school means preparing books, uniforms and school supplies.

But there is another preparation that is often overlooked:

√How will she manage her period at school?

For girls living in households struggling to meet basic needs, menstrual products can become an unaffordable expense.

And when a girl does not have what she needs to manage her period safely and with dignity, the consequences can go beyond discomfort.

√She may miss classes.
√Fall behind in her lessons.
√Avoid participating in school activities. Or simply,
√Stay home until her period ends.

No girl should have to choose between her menstrual dignity and her education.

Through our "Back-to-School Campaign", Visionary Care Foundation-Cameroon is calling attention to the everyday barriers that can quietly keep girls out of school.

A menstrual hygiene kit may seem small.

But for a girl, it can mean showing up, participating, learning and staying in school with confidence.

As we prepare children for a new school year, let's remember that preparing girls for school also means preparing them for their menstrual health and dignity.

"Same Classroom. Same Dreams. Different Starting Points."

For one child, going back to school may mean a new uniform, new shoes, fresh notebooks and the excitement of starting a new school year.

For another, it may mean returning in the same worn-out uniform from the previous years.

Not because they care less about school.

Not because they have less potential.

But because their family simply cannot afford to replace what they have.

This is one of the quieter ways "inequality shows up in education".

Two children can sit in the same classroom, study the same subjects and dream about the same future, yet begin the school year with very different levels of dignity, confidence and support.

A uniform will not solve every barrier a child faces.

But every child deserves to walk through the school gate feeling that they belong there.

As part of our Back-to-School Campaign, Visionary Care Foundation-Cameroon is calling on individuals, partners and communities to help children who need basic school essentials to return to school prepared, confident and with dignity.

Because the goal should not simply be to get children into school.

It should be to create conditions that help every child "participate, belong and thrive."

What if the school bag is ready, but there is nothing to put inside it?

For some children, going back to school means excitement; new books, fresh notebooks, pens, and everything they need to begin another year of learning.

For others, it means carrying an almost empty bag.

Not because they do not want to learn.

But because their families simply cannot afford everything they need.

A child should not have to choose between going to school and having the basic materials needed to participate fully in the classroom.

An empty school bag can represent more than missing books. It can mean:

√missed assignments.
√Falling behind.
√Embarrassment among peers.
√Reduced participation. And, over time,
√a child losing confidence in their ability to succeed.

Every child deserves to return to school prepared to learn.

Through our Back-to-School Campaign, Visionary Care Foundation-Cameroon is calling on individuals, partners, friends and members of our communities to help children who need school supplies to begin the new school year with dignity.

√A notebook may seem small.
