Celebrating African heritage, mentoring tomorrow's actors.

What does African Heritage mean to you?

African Heritage means the inheritance and birthrights of the African people: the customs and traditions, the sites and natural resources of the continent, the arts, monuments, stories, music, dance, languages, and traditional beliefs of the people.

At Doram, we don't only tell the stories to young people, we also involve them in seeing and taking part in the story. This way, our heritage stays as an inheritance and a birthright for tomorrow’s actors.

When young people identify with their local culture and craft, it becomes a heritage.

When they adore the art, it becomes a legacy for the craft men and women.

The culture and craft of the people remain one of the continent’s biggest power. As a creative Social Enterprise, we are passionate about promoting the creative works in our communities and the impacts on the locals.

Last week, we visited the Bamenda Handicraft Cooperative Society Ltd. in Northwest to see the crafts of the people in the region. The center is the largest and one of the very few left in the city.

While at the gallery, one thing stood out: Every design was original, made from natural resources, more durable, and environmentally friendly.

From the beautiful baskets weaved with organic fibre, to the fine wooden cups and bowls made from hard wood, every finishing was clean.

Back in the days, we ate food in wooden plates and drank from wooden and bamboo cups. We used our locally woven bags at the markets and schools. Art and craft were part of the daily lives of the indigenous people. They built empires that reflected their identity and power.

Unfortunately, nowadays, Africa’s natural artifacts are largely seen as old-fashioned and history kept in museums, thereby limiting demand for the great works of the people.

At Doram, we believe that Africa’s power and growth potential greatly depend on giving value to its natural resources and originality.

Africa's creative wear industry has witnessed significant growth in recent years. The sector is projected to reach an estimated annual value of $50 billion by 2030.

However, the industry faces challenges, including fragmented supply chains and competition from imported secondhand clothing, which limits its ability to fully capture global market share. It currently represents only about 1.2% to 1.5% of the global creative economy.

In Cameroon, the industry is still largely dominated by the informal sector, mostly small-scale designers, who control just less than 5% of the domestic market. Many of the creatives lack the opportunity to break through the market due to heavy competition from imported apparel from countries such as China.

What can be done to improve growth in the creative wear industry in Cameroon and Africa?

At Doram, we believe that an increased sense of originality and cultural identity among the local people could increase demand for indigenous African designs.

At the TiC Summit Regional Hackathon in Bamenda, organized by the TiC Foundation in collaboration with Doram and other partners on March 15, nearly 250 young people from the Northwest region created and presented 15 projects that aim to solve problems in their local communities in Cameroon.

From Agriculture to Health and Electricity, the students in their different groups presented groundbreaking hardware and software demos that, if further developed, could bring meaningful transformations in these key areas in and .

Key innovations presented during the program include:

-Using water to generate oxygen for patients in the hospitals.
-Using scrap CDs and wires to generate solar power in communities.
-A Web-based platform for the sale and purchase of poultry products.

At Doram, we believe in the originality of young people in our communities. We also believe that their creative ideas, if well-tailored could bring meaning change for the good of the common people.

The Winners of the Regional Hackathons from each region of the country will take part in the upcoming National Hackathon in Yaoundé.
