CIRMAD HOLDS VALIDATION WORKSHOP ON ENDANGERED SPECIES OF KIMBI-FUNGOM NATIONAL PARK

The Centre for Indigenous Resources Management and Development (CIRMAD) organized a successful validation workshop on 26/11/2025 at Hotel Pessi in Bafoussam. The session focused on reviewing and validating the comprehensive study report on the conservation status of the seven most endangered or endemic flora and fauna species of the Kimbi-Fungom National Park, as well as their proposed conservation plans.

This study was conducted within the framework of the ACREGIR Project, which aims to enhance biodiversity protection and strengthen community-based conservation initiatives.

The event gathered a diverse group of experts and stakeholders, including officials from the MINEPDED and MINFOF central services, regional delegates, university professors, naturalists, and conservation practitioners. Their insights and recommendations contributed significantly to enriching the final report and ensuring that the proposed conservation strategies are practical, evidence-based, and locally relevant.

CIRMAD extends its appreciation to all participants for their commitment to environmental preservation and for supporting ongoing efforts to protect the invaluable biodiversity of the Kimbi-Fungom National Park.

Back home after the Agroforestry training workshop organized in Bamenda last June by CIRMAD under the auspices of the ACREGIR project for youths of the Kimbi-Fungom National Park area, Attia Siana Sih and Geh Gilbert Kai who came from Munkep village in Fungom Sub-Division, accompanied by other members of the Esu-Gayama Basin" group organized some community sensitisation. This was to propagate the practice of agroforestry as one of the ACREGIR project measures to build community resilience to climate change.
According to Siana, "The inhabitants of Munkep community were very excited about it and they promised to go into the planting of trees like bush mango, for which they depended only on the ones in the forest. The Chief of Munkep community said he was going to establish a plantation of white wood and he ended by thanking the participants for creating such an awareness in his community."
Note the T-shirts they adorn, self-financed and further propagating the ideals of ACREGIR and CIRMAD.

CIRMAD recently organized a workshop in Wum for the pre-validation of the report of a study by CIRMAD on the most endangered and endemic flora and fauna species of the Kimbi-Fungom National Park, as part of the ACREGIR project.

The participants to the workshop, which included naturalists, hunters, farmers, students, climate activists and conservationists were drawn mainly from target villages of the Kimbi-Fungom National Park peripheral zone, Bamenda and Wum itself. It was facilitated by a botanist and a wildlife management specialist of the CIRMAD team.

The workshop participants also discussed and made inputs to the draft of climate conservation plans for the most endangered and endemic species Kimbi-Fungom National Park, the only national park in the Bamenda Highlands.
Another key point of the workshop, though improvised, was a proposed Problem Animal Control/Management (PAC/PAM) plan generated to address the case of chimpanzees attacking and even killing denizens in the Esu area of Menchum Division.

The final report, reviewed with inputs from the Wum workshop will be validated in a later workshop.
