🌍 WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT 2026.

On June 17 2026, the world joins together to observe the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, a global call to protect our land, restore degraded ecosystems, and build resilience against the growing impacts of climate change.

This year's theme, "Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.", reminds us of the vital role that rangelands play in sustaining life on our planet.

🌱 Recognize the immense value of rangelands in supporting biodiversity, food production, water regulation, carbon storage, and rural livelihoods.

🤝 Respect the pastoralists, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities whose traditional knowledge and stewardship have preserved these landscapes for generations.

🌿 Restore degraded lands through sustainable land management practices, ecosystem restoration, water conservation, climate-smart agriculture, and community-led action.

Rangelands cover more than half of the Earth's land surface, yet many are under threat from climate change, unsustainable land use, overgrazing, and environmental degradation. Protecting and restoring these ecosystems is essential for achieving food security, combating poverty, conserving biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience.

As environmental stakeholders, development practitioners, community leaders, farmers, youth, and citizens, we all have a role to play. Every tree planted, every degraded landscape restored, every sustainable farming practice adopted, and every environmental awareness campaign conducted contributes to a healthier and more resilient future.

🌍🌱 CEMASUD JOINS STAKEHOLDERS TO COMMEMORATE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 IN THE NORTH WEST REGION 🌱🌍

The Community Empowerment Agency for Sustainable Development (CEMASUD) is pleased to report the successful commemoration of World Environment Day (WED) 2026 on Friday, 5th June 2026, at the Conference Hall of the North West Regional Delegation of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED).

The event marked the climax of a week-long series of environmental activities organized under the global theme:

🌿 "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

The celebration brought together government officials, environmental stakeholders, civil society organizations, traditional authorities, media representatives, educational institutions, pupils, students, and environmental advocates from across the region.

Key Highlights of the Celebration

✅ Opening Remarks and Official Proceedings

The ceremony was officially opened by the North West Regional Delegation of MINEPDED, setting the stage for reflection, learning, recognition, and renewed commitment to environmental stewardship.

✅ Presentation of the United Nations Secretary-General's World Environment Day Message

The North West Regional Delegate of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development delivered the official message of the United Nations Secretary-General for World Environment Day 2026.

The message emphasized the urgent need for global and local action to address climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and environmental degradation while highlighting the critical role of nature-based solutions in securing a sustainable future.

✅ Keynote Address by the President of NEST-CAM

A major highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by Pastor Chiaga Eric, Executive Director of CEMASUD and current President/Coordinator of the Network of Environmental Stakeholders in Cameroon (NEST-CAM).

In his address, he emphasized that:

🌍 Environmental protection is a collective responsibility.

🌱 Nature is not merely a resource but a vital partner in sustaining life and building resilient communities.

🤝 Sustainable environmental management requires stronger collaboration between government institutions, civil society organizations, communities, traditional authorities, educational institutions, and development partners.

👩🏽‍🎓 Young people must be empowered to become environmental ambassadors and climate champions.

🌳 The true success of World Environment Day will be measured not by today's celebrations but by the actions stakeholders continue to take after the event.

He also expressed profound gratitude to all stakeholders whose financial, material, technical, and moral support contributed to the success of the week-long activities.

✅ Environmental Presentations and Stakeholder Engagement

Participants exchanged experiences, lessons, and best practices on environmental protection, climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable development.

✅ Award of Prizes to Outstanding Students

The event concluded with the award of prizes and certificates to deserving winners of the Environmental Quiz Competition organized for:

🌍🌱 CEMASUD SUPPORTS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 CELEBRATION AT BAMENDAMKWE FON'S PALACE 🌱🌍

As part of the commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, the Community Empowerment Agency for Sustainable Development (CEMASUD), working in collaboration with the Network of Environmental Stakeholders in Cameroon (NEST-CAM), the North West Regional Delegation of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED), traditional authorities, and other environmental stakeholders, participated in a remarkable environmental action event at the Bamendamkwe Fon's Palace.

One of the major highlights of the event was the donation of over 500 environmentally friendly tree seedlings, which will contribute to ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, watershed protection, climate resilience, and the creation of greener and healthier communities.

CEMASUD also facilitated a highly interactive and insightful panel discussion held at the Palace Conference Hall on the theme:

"Local Actions and Their Effects on the Environment and the Community"

The discussion brought together traditional leaders, environmental experts, civil society organizations, students, community members, and development stakeholders to examine how everyday actions at the local level directly influence environmental sustainability, public health, livelihoods, and community development.

Key issues discussed included:
🌳 Deforestation and tree conservation
💧 Protection of water catchments and watersheds
♻️ Waste management and pollution control
🌱 Community participation in environmental protection

🌍🌱 EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS! 🌱🌍

As part of the activities marking World Environment Day 2026, CEMASUD, in collaboration with the Network of Environmental Stakeholders in Cameroon (NEST-CAM) and the Regional Delegation of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED), successfully organized an Environmental Quiz Competition for Primary, Secondary/High School, and University students at the Conference Hall of MINEPDED in Bamenda.

The competition provided a unique platform for young people to showcase their knowledge of environmental conservation, climate change, biodiversity, sustainable development, and this year's World Environment Day theme:

🍃 "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

The enthusiasm, confidence, and environmental awareness demonstrated by the students were truly inspiring and a clear indication that the future of environmental stewardship is in capable hands.

Earlier in the day, environmental stakeholders also participated in a Live Panel Discussion on CRTV Bamenda's Highlands Morning Show, where experts and practitioners explored the significance of this year's theme and highlighted the urgent need for collective action to address climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss.

These activities reaffirm our shared commitment to environmental education, climate action, and community engagement as we continue preparations for the grand celebration of World Environment Day 2026.

🌍🌱 WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 LAUNCHING MEETING SUCCESSFULLY HELD IN BAMENDA 🌱🌍

As part of preparations for the commemoration of World Environment Day (WED) 2026, environmental stakeholders from across the North West Region gathered on Tuesday 2nd June 2026, at the Conference Hall of the Regional Delegation of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) for the official launching meeting.

The meeting brought together representatives of government institutions, civil society organizations, environmental groups, community-based organizations, youth-led initiatives, and other stakeholders committed to environmental protection and sustainable development.

The session focused on reviewing available resources and support, confirming participating organizations and individuals, assigning responsibilities, finalizing logistics, and strengthening collaboration for the successful implementation of the various activities planned to commemorate World Environment Day 2026.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to making this year's celebration impactful through environmental education, awareness creation, quiz competitions, media engagements, tree donation and planting exercises, stakeholder dialogues, and community participation.

Special appreciation goes to the Regional Delegation of MINEPDED and NEST-CAM for hosting the meeting and to all stakeholders whose presence, contributions, and commitment continue to strengthen collective environmental action in the North West Region.

🌍 NEST-CAM KICKS OFF PREPARATIONS FOR WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 🌱

The Network of Environmental Stakeholders in Cameroon (NEST-CAM) successfully held its World Environment Day 2026 Planning Meeting on Tuesday, 26th May 2026, at the CEMASUD Conference Hall in Bamenda.

The meeting was presided over by Pst. Chiaga Eric, NEST-CAM's President and Executive Director of CEMASUD, and brought together 15 representatives from member organizations committed to environmental protection, climate action, and sustainable development.

Participants reviewed the official theme for World Environment Day 2026 – “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” and adopted a series of activities to be implemented from 26th May to 5th June 2026, including:

✅ Social media awareness campaigns
✅ Environmental quiz competitions for primary, secondary, and university students
✅ Live television and radio panel discussions
✅ Roundtable discussions with students and civil society organizations
✅ Tree planting and tree donation exercises
✅ Environmental education and awareness activities
✅ Awards and recognition for outstanding participants
✅ Capacity building for environmental stakeholders

The meeting also called on organizations, institutions, and individuals to actively participate in the celebrations through the donation of trees, sponsorship of quiz prizes, logistical support, and participation in various activities.

As environmental challenges continue to threaten our communities, collective action remains more important than ever. NEST-CAM reaffirms its commitment to working with government institutions, civil society organizations, schools, traditional authorities, and community members to promote environmental stewardship and climate resilience across Cameroon.
