At least 73 women in Cameroon have been killed in femicide cases recorded between January and September this year, according to data from the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and the Family quoted by state media.

This means an average of two women are killed every week due to circumstances that pertain to their gender as a woman.

These are not just mere figures but the lives of mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and community members lost in the most painful circumstances.

Take Diane Yidi Ebabi, for example, who at just 19 years old had her life snuffed out when her boyfriend strangled her to death during a dispute in Yaoundé on August 8. For Modestine, 34, her husband used a butcher's knife to take her life in front of their two young children in Douala on August 22.

Just a day earlier, another woman, a mother of three, was killed and decapitated by her partner in Yaounde. He fled with the children to Kumba, where he was arrested and later confessed to the crime.

At least eight of the 73 reported femicide cases happened within a span of seven days in late August.

“Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.” International Day of Peace 2026

Though YOWEC is a young organisation, our journey is rooted in experience. Our Founder and Executive Director brings years of engagement with women, young people, community peacebuilders and local actors in advancing peace, social cohesion, women’s participation and community resilience. Her peacebuilding journey has been strengthened through her membership/service in networks and organisations such as the South West North West Women’s Taskforce (SNWOT), Women’s Peacebuilders Network (WOPEN), North West Farmers Organisation (NOWEFOR) and The Center for Advocacy in Gender Equality and Action for Development (CAGEAD) . These are spaces that bring women together to contribute to peacebuilding, dialogue, advocacy and inclusive community action.

At YOWEC, we believe that Peace begins with us. Peace grows through us. Peace transforms communities. Investing in peace means to invest in people, dignity, opportunity, dialogue and the meaningful participation of women and youth. Let’s continue to carryout everyday actions that build safer, more inclusive and resilient communities.

We invite friends, partners, families and well-wishers to invest in our mission of “Empowering local communities especially women and youth to lead their own development and promote sustainable practices. Walk with us as we empower communities and individuals to become everyday architects of peace. Every positive act no matter how small it may seem is worth it.
Together, let us invest in peace.

SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALIVE. SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SAFE. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! STOP FEMICIDE!

Today, we did not just march. We spoke, we mourned and demanded action. We walked for the women and girls whose lives have been brutally cut short. We walked for survivors whose voices are too often silenced. We walked for mothers, daughters, sisters and friends who deserve to live without fear.

Youth and Women Empowerment Center (YOWEC) was amongst the many voices made-up of Civil Society Organisations, development partners, government representatives, bike riders and other committed men who came together during the campaign march organised by , and Regional Delegation North West in Bamenda to say: NO MORE FEMICIDE! ALL LIVES MATTER

The reported 66 cases of femicide recorded in Cameroon within the first eight months of 2026 should shake every one of us. Behind every number was a life, was a woman who had dreams, was a daughter who was loved, was a mother who was needed, was a sister who mattered and was a friend whose presence meant something.

66 lives! 66 families! 66 stories! That should not have ended this way. This is why we cannot remain silent. Femicide is not a private family issue. GBV is not a women's problem alone. Violence against women and girls is not inevitable.

It is preventable. But prevention requires courage. It requires communities willing to challenge harmful norms. It requires institutions that respond before violence becomes fatal. It requires survivors to be believed, protected and supported and it requires perpetrators to face justice.

At YOWEC, we believe that every woman and girl deserves more than survival. She deserves the freedom to live, participate, lead, work, love, dream and pursue her future without fear.

Our 5th and final day of the GBV Case Management Training was powerful and deeply necessary.

We explored Staff Care, unpacking the heavy burden of trauma, stress, burnout, and vicarious trauma that frontline workers often carry.

More importantly, participants were equipped with practical tools to protect their minds and hearts, because you cannot pour from an empty cup.

We also strengthened our skills in Information Management, mastering informed consent, data storage, coding, and addressing the complex challenges of ethical information sharing.

To our organisers and facilitators—WAG Cameroon, TeenAlive Cameroon, and UNFPA—thank you for your unwavering vision, tireless dedication, and for creating a space where both learning and healing could thrive.

The work ahead is challenging, but we are now stronger, wiser, and better prepared. Let us go forth to protect survivors, care for ourselves, and contribute to building a world free from gender-based violence.

Day 4 of GBV case management training wasn't just about learning procedures. It was about strengthening our ability to stand with survivors when they need support the most.

We explored every stage of GBV case management from effective implementation and case follow-up to ethical case closure. We also strengthened our understanding of referral pathways, lead case coordination, case conferencing, and psychosocial support, all of which ensure survivors receive timely, confidential, and survivor-centered care.

A key focus was on responding to intimate partner violence, practicing safe mediation where appropriate, and providing tailored support for women and adolescent girls affected by s*xual violence. Every skill gained is another step toward restoring dignity, promoting healing, and helping survivors rebuild their lives.

Together, we continue building safer communities, breaking the cycle of violence, and ensuring that no survivor has to walk their journey alone.

YOWEC continued with Day 3 of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Case Management Training, organized by and , with technical support from the (UNFPA), under the Woman Eh! Wuna Place Dey Project.

The day reinforced the importance of turning knowledge into action. Itdeepened understanding of what it truly means to walk alongside a survivor from the first moment of contact, through careful and compassionate assessment, to creating a plan that puts their safety and needs at the center.

Participants explored how to greet survivors with warmth, obtain informed consent with clarity, and protect dignity through every step of the process. The training also covered how to recognize when someone is in immediate danger, assess emotional and safety needs, and connect survivors to the right services at the right time.

Being a caseworker is not just a role, it is a responsibility rooted in empathy, respect, and an unwavering commitment to confidentiality. Every survivor deserves to be heard without judgment, supported without delay, and empowered to make choices about their own healing.

A kind word, a listening ear, and choosing to believe survivors can change the course of someone's life. Let us replace silence with support, and stigma with solidarity.
Together, our actions can help build a future free from GBV.

Day 2 of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Case Management Training, explored attitudes and perception about GBV, the vital role of caseworkers, and effective communication in supporting survivors.

Through practical exercises and group discussions, participants enhanced their skills in delivering survivor-centered services with empathy, confidentiality, active listening, and appropriate referrals.

Supporting survivors begins with how we respond. Whether as caseworkers or members of the community, we must replace judgment with compassion, uphold survivors' dignity, and help create an environment where they feel safe to seek support.

The training is organized by WAG Cameroon and TeenAlive Cameroon, with technical support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), under the Woman Eh! Wuna Place Dey Project.

Together, our actions can help build a future free from gender-based violence.

Today, YOWEC participated in Day 1 of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Case Management Training, organized by WAG Cameroon and TeenAlive Cameroon, with technical support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), within the framework of the Woman Eh! Wuna Place Dey Project.

The first day focused on building a strong foundation in understanding Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Participants explored understanding GBV, s*x and gender, power and GBV, the ecological model, types and examples of GBV, as well as the causes, contributing factors, and consequences of GBV.

The training was highly interactive, featuring practical group exercises, engaging discussions, and experience sharing. It was a rewarding opportunity to learn alongside participants from various organizations, exchange perspectives, and strengthen our collective commitment to preventing and responding to GBV.

Together, we can create a community with no GBV!
