Announcement: Renaming of the Misha Mahowald Prize to the Mahowald-Mead Prize

The directors of the Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering are pleased to announce that, with immediate effect, the names of all future prizes will be changed to the Mahowald-Mead Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering. The addition of the name of Carver Mead to the Prize recognizes his fundamental contributions and influence on the field.

Researchers wishing to be considered for an award are reminded that, as in previous years, submissions for both the Mahowald-Mead Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering (MMP) and the Mahowald Early Career Prize (MECA) close on October 31 at 23:59 UTC. All other regulations regarding the Prizes shall remain the same as in previous years.

About the Mahowald-Mead Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering

The Misha Mahowald Prize has been awarded annually since 2016 for outstanding research in the field of neuromorphic engineering, worldwide. Dr. Misha Mahowald was a highly talented, influential, and charismatic pioneer of neuromorphic engineering. From 2026 onwards, the prize has been renamed to the Mahowald-Mead Prize. Caltech Prof. Emeritus Carver Mead is the most influential early proponent of using the processing principles of the nervous system in analog and mixed-signal VLSI chip designs.

The 2025 Misha Mahowald award winners have been selected by the respective juries as follows:

The 2025 Misha Mahowald Prize (MMP) is awarded to the OPUS team from UC Santa Barbara led by Kerem Çamsarı for their work on "Stochastic Neuromorphic Computing with Probabilistic Bits".

The 2025 Mahowald Early Career Award (MECA) is awarded equally to:
Mark Iskarous for the work on "Invariant neuromorphic representations of tactile stimuli improves robustness of a real-time texture classification", and
Jens Egholm Pedersen for the work on "Neuromorphic Intermediate Representation".

Congratulations to the prize winners! The prize directors would like to convey their appreciation to the independent juries once again for their service.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE reminder

The 2025 Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering and the 2025 Mahowald Early Career Award

The Misha Mahowald Prize recognizes outstanding research in neuromorphic engineering in a broad sense: neurally-inspired hardware, software, and algorithms; as well as other novel architectures. The Prize is awarded by a jury of international experts chaired by Prof. Terrence Sejnowski, and carries a prize of USD 10,000.

The Mahowald Early Career Award recognizes outstanding Master's students, PhD doctoral students, or postdocs within one year of PhD degree conferral date. The Award is for an individual (not a group) who has created innovative neuromorphic hardware, software, or an algorithm. The Award is decided by a jury of established mid-career scientists chaired by Prof. Andre van Schaik, and carries a prize of USD 2,000 together with a guaranteed seat at either the Capo Caccia or the Telluride Workshops for Cognitive Neuromorphic Engineering.

The submission deadline for both the Prize and the Award is 23:59 UTC, 31 October 2024.
