Why Reinvent the Bike? Just Replace the Engine with a Battery!

The Rwandan company Ampersand is rapidly replacing petrol motorcycles in Rwanda and Kenya with electric alternatives, without reinventing the entire bike. It uses existing petrol-bike designs but replaces the combustion engine with an electric drivetrain. This allows Ampersand to focus on what matters most: long-lasting batteries and a network where riders can swap an empty battery for a charged one in under two minutes. A smart and practical way to accelerate the transition to electric transport.

Great solutions already exist, but we need more people demanding rapid change. That’s why we are building Burn or Learn, the social climate action platform that makes it easy for everybody, everywhere to take climate action.

We are in the decisive decade and need to cut global emissions roughly in half by 2030. Are we on track?

There is some good news: solar and wind power are expanding rapidly, while batteries increasingly allow us to store clean electricity for when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.

But while clean energy is growing, new coal and gas power plants are still being built instead of existing ones being closed down. As a result, greenhouse-gas emissions are still increasing: they reached a record high in 2024 and again in 2025. We are dangerously off track and are running out of time.

If you think you are doing enough by recycling, eating less meat and flying less, it is not enough. You need to make your voice heard because governments and companies will only act if there is enough public pressure.

That’s why we are building Burn or Learn, the social climate action platform that makes it easy for everybody everywhere to take action.

Nearly 40% of companies failed to meet their climate targets or quietly stopped reporting on them, with virtually no consequences.

This was found in a study by researchers from Harvard, Berkeley, and NYU, which examined more than 1,000 companies that had set greenhouse-gas reduction targets. Among the companies that failed:
* Only one-third admitted the failure.
* Just three received media coverage.
* There was no significant effect on stock prices, environmental ratings, media sentiment, or shareholder engagement.

This shows that companies won’t act if there is no public pressure. That’s why we built Burn or Learn, the social climate action platform. Learn more and take action at burnorlearn.org/post/AAAk7 🔥🌍

Individual choices matter, but they cannot solve the climate crisis. Around one-third of global emissions come from electricity and one-quarter from industry. Even in transport, food and buildings, most emissions are NOT in your hands but come from companies and governments. And they will not act, if there is no public pressure.

So, the most important thing YOU can do is use your voice to ask to reduce emissions fast.

That’s why we built burnorlearn.org, the social climate action platform that makes it easy for you to demand climate action NOW.

The world is likely to exceed 1.5°C of warming within the next few years, and the best-case scenario is now 1.8°C, according to a new UNEP report.

Above 1.5°C, extreme weather events such as heatwaves, wildfires and floods become more frequent and severe—but that’s not all. The risk of irreversible tipping points also increases, including the collapse of major ice sheets, the degradation of the Amazon rainforest and the disruption of crucial ocean currents. Once crossed, some of these tipping points cannot be reversed.

Vietnam just showed how quickly cleaner technology can take over a market. Xanh SM launched its all-electric taxi service in 2023. Within seven months, it was already Vietnam’s #2 ride-hailing provider and by the end of 2024, it had overtaken Grab to become the market leader. By the end of 2025, Xanh SM controlled more than half of Vietnam’s four-wheel ride-hailing market.

A powerful example of how quickly the transition to electric transport can happen when a better alternative scales fast.

The latest State of Climate Action 2025 report finds that the world must phase out coal more than ten times faster to limit warming to 1.5°C.

This means retiring nearly 360 coal-fired power plants every year and cancelling all planned coal plant construction projects.

If this is what we need to do, why are we not doing it?

Simple: Because there is not enough public pressure.

That's why we are building Burn or Learn: a platform where people around the world can make their voices heard and demand climate action NOW.

But it will only work if enough people join. That includes YOU.

Go to burnorlearn.org and do your daily climate duty: Take one climate action every day.

Congratulations to Maruf Tunji Alausa for being the Most Innovative Cabinet Minister 2025. 👏

Now it’s time for the next innovative step!

If education is meant to equip the next generation for the future, then climate literacy is not an “elective” — it’s a survival skill. We are teaching children calculus and history while leaving them unprepared for the climate realities they will inherit and lead.

Climate change is no longer a future problem. Nigerian children are already living through its impacts. If education is truly meant to prepare young people for the future, then climate education should not be optional. Students need to understand:

• causes and impacts of climate change
• how to adapt and build resilience
• sustainable living and climate action
• green innovation and careers

We respectfully ask Maruf Tunji Alausa to make climate education part of the national curriculum. 🌍

We congratulate the new Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) Director, Kate Ocheze Ogbonna, for pushing contractors to improve sanitation and waste management across Abuja. 👏

We would like to take this opportunity to ask the Director to tackle another growing issue: blocked drainages, which can cause flash floods and public health risks.

The project on the Burn or Learn 🔥🌍 platform is documenting blocked drainage incidents reported by citizens across Abuja. We invite the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to receive these reports and act on every case.

For every blocked drain that gets fixed, we will celebrate and applaud the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and its Director, Kate Ocheze Ogbonna, for helping to create a cleaner, safer, and more flood-resilient Abuja.
