JOIN US FOR THE SWISS FILM PREMIERE OF '50 HOURS UNDERWATER'

On Monday, 8 September, a special event will take place at Urbansurf Zürich: the Swiss premiere of the documentary 50 Hours Underwater. We hope to see some of the Switzerland for the Oceans community there!

The film follows tech diver Shafraz Naeem (Shaff), who spent an incredible 50 hours underwater non-stop to raise awareness of the devastating effects of plastic pollution in the Maldives. Following the screening, there will be a live Q&A with Shaff, as well as a preview of our upcoming major expedition Across Maldives (January 2026).

📍 Urbansurf Zürich
🕖 Doors open 19:00 | Event start 19:30
🎟 Tickets: https://eventfrog.ch/de/p/freizeit-ausfluege/film-kino/swiss-premiere-50-hours-underwater-openair-film-screening-7360597769520689729.html (All ticket proceeds go 100% towards the Across Maldives expedition.)
🏄 Additionally, all donors to our GoFundMe campaign on the night will be entered into a draw to win a surf session at Urbansurf.

We would be thrilled to see some of the Switzerland for the Oceans community at this special late-summer evening with beach vibes, an inspiring film, and exciting conversations!

Warm regards,
Olivia, Across Maldives Team, and Switzerland for the Oceans Team

🔬 Marine Science Meets Sailing – Aeolian Islands 2025 ⛵

Looking for hands-on marine research experience on board a sailing vessel? Join our Scientific Sailing Expedition around the UNESCO-protected Aeolian Islands in summer and autumn 2025!

📍 Located off northern Sicily, this volcanic archipelago faces serious ecological threats — including rising plastic pollution. Since 2021, our non-profit has been leading microplastic monitoring in these waters. In 2025, we’ll be using advanced techniques to study particles as small as 50 microns.

🗓️ Expedition Dates
Leg 1: 12. – 19. July
Leg 2: 19. – 26. July
Leg 3: 27. September – 4. October
Leg 4: 4. – 11. October

This is a field-based learning opportunity where participants contribute directly to data collection and research. As we are a non-profit organisation, there is a participation fee to cover operational costs.

🌊 Sail into Science: Summer 2025 in the Azores!

Embark on a one-of-a-kind journey to the Azores, a volcanic island chain rising from the depths of the North Atlantic. Situated at the meeting of three tectonic plates, this remote archipelago is not just a sailor’s paradise—it’s a hotspot for marine life. From s***m whales and pilot whales to the mighty blue whale, the Azores are home to some of the planet’s most majestic marine creatures.

Why the Azores?

In 2021, the Azores earned “hope spot” status from Mission Blue, highlighting their ecological significance. However, this fragile marine ecosystem is under threat from plastic pollution. Since 2019, we've partnered with Dr. Christopher Pham’s team to monitor microplastics in these waters, focusing on particles as small as 0.05 mm—tiny but impactful to marine organisms.

This summer, join us aboard as we sail south of Faial and Pico islands, where science meets adventure. Together, we’ll contribute to critical research while experiencing the stunning beauty of this unique environment.

Expedition Dates:

- Leg 1: 28. June – 05. July
- Leg 2: 05. July – 12. July
- Leg 3: 26. July – 02. August
- Leg 4: 02. August – 09. August
- Leg 5: 23. August – 30. August
- Leg 6: 30. August – 06. September
