EAT/ Engadin Art Talks

Forum of art, architecture, design, film and literature taking place in January of every year in Zuoz, Engadin.

The Engadin in winter is associated with the beauty of the landscape, sporting activity, unadulterated relaxation and art in the form of the E.A.T. The aim of the Engadin Art Talks is to facilitate dialogue between artists, architects and creatives and, in this way, perpetuate the history of the Engadin as a place of intensive intellectual activity and discourse.

We would like to introduce you to this year’s participants:

Franziska Aigner () is an artist that works at the intersection of music, philosophy and performance.

Hernando Chindoy Chindoy () is an expert in traditional knowledge, biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Simone Fattal () is an artist known for abstract and figurative ceramic sculptures that explore the impact of displacement as well as the politics of archeology and excavation.

Deborah-Joyce Holman () is a multidisciplinary artist who’s practice is concerned with the relationship between popular visual cultures and capital and the intertwined politics of representation.

Menelaos Karamaghiolis (.km) is an artist and filmmaker who creates moving image productions which star real-life neglected heroes and transcend frontiers and stereotypes to serve as an essential tool for dialogue and social change.

Zilla Leutenegger () is an artist that is known for her signature drawing style made up of clear, bold strokes and strong color accents.

Paola Audrey Ndengue () is a content producer, entrepreneur and media personality.

Rasha Salti () is a researcher, writer, producer and curator of art and film.

Elisa Silva is an architect and the director and founder of Enlace Arquitectura () and Enlace Foundation.

Klaudia Schifferle () is an artist, musician and cofounder of the women’s band Kleenex / Liliput.

Dieter Schwarz is an independent curator and author based in Zurich.

Dorothea Strauss () is a curator and expert in change processes and sustainability.

Christopher Kulendran Thomas () is an artist who manipulates some of the structural processes by which art produces reality.

This years forum will be centered around the theme of “Jenseits von Ohnmacht / Beyond Powerless”.

During his speech at the previous forum in Zuoz, former President of Germany, Joachim Gauck (), reminded us that, while our world is facing multiple crises, art can and should play a central role for positive change and a sustainable future.

Coming from the fields of science, art, music, film, and architecture, this year’s participants lead their respective fields internationally. We offer a programme full of impulses, ideas, and conversations around the subject of ‘Jenseits von Ohnmacht – Beyond Powerless’ and we look forward to sharing this collective experience with you.

Karma International (), representative gallery of upcoming E.A.T. participant Simone Fattal (), presents the work of James Bantone () and Markus Oehlen () in two solo exhibitions that are currently on view.

James Bantone’s work is an ongoing exploration of mimesis and mimetic desire through uncanny reproductions. Bantone seeks to address the verbal, physical and gestural codes of contemporary culture as they pertain to racial, sexual and gender norms and stereotypes. His work, which often includes large scale installation, photography and video, questions notions of identity and belonging.

Markus Oehlen is one of the founding member of the German Neo-Expressionist movement Junge Wilde, who’s four decades long career has spanned across painting, sculpture, digital drawing, and music. Inspired by Op Art, his paintings take a distinctly geometric form that is contrasted with vicious curves, and in his latest works, interspersed with collaged photographs and digital drawings composed on an iPad.

When in Zurich, do not miss it! The exhibitions on Weststrasse 70 and Weststrasse 75 are both on view until January 13.

When in Lisbon, don’t miss the group exhibition ‘Bodies of Resistance’ at Galeria Pedro Cera (), which shows ceramic work by artist and former E.A.T. speaker Mai-Thu Perret ().

For centuries, the body and its collective experience have become a site of political discourse, struggle, and regulation. It has been a central focus of political power, ideology, and control. One of the ways modern societies exercise power and control over populations is by managing their biological and physiological aspects, establishing a direct relationship between power, knowledge, and the body in contemporary society, thus making it also one of the most powerful tools of modern governance and societal control.

Placed in a post-apocalyptic future, the exhibition introduces works that take the subject of the body as their point of departure. Envisioning the body’s expansive future, the exhibition aims to emancipate the body from standardization and categorization. These non-standardized bodies re-claim their rights, opening the doors to alternative narrative histories, as do the invisible bodies channeled through the handmade ceramics of Mai-Thu Perret. Besides Perret’s work, the exhibition features new and existing works by Eva Koťátková (), Manuel Chavajay (), Mónica Mays (), Nora Aurrekoetxea, Sara Graça, Wynnie Mynerva () and Xie Lei ().

The exhibition is on view until January 13!
