Grazie alle donazioni ricevute negli scorsi mesi, abbiamo finanziato i prossimi 3 mesi di lezioni di inglese per i due orfanotrofi che sosteniamo nel sud dello Sri Lanka.
Un supporto concreto che garantisce ai bambini continuità, fiducia e la possibilità di costruire un futuro diverso.
Con il resto delle donazioni raccolte questa settimana, porteremo sul posto cibo, prodotti essenziali e materiale medico alle famiglie colpite dalle alluvioni.

HIRU Update☀️
Thanks to the donations received over the past months, we have funded the next 3 months of English lessons for the two orphanages we support in Southern Sri Lanka.
A concrete form of support that gives children continuity, confidence, and the chance to build a different and brighter future.
With the remaining donations collected this week, we will provide essential food, basic supplies and medical items to families affected by the recent floods.

HIRU Update ☀️
In our last update, we shared that we would bring medical supplies to Sri Lanka.
Today, we are happy to reveal the hospital that will receive our support:

Walasmulla Hospital – Southern Province 🇱🇰

We will deliver advanced dressings and medical supplies that can no longer be used in Switzerland but remain highly valuable for patient care in Sri Lanka.

We hope to build, over time, a stable and respectful collaboration with the hospital, to bring support where it’s truly needed.

🏫 1. Gettare le basi del nostro sogno: l’HIRU After School Center
Un luogo sicuro dove i bambini possano imparare, giocare e crescere.
Uno spazio che offre lezioni di inglese, pasti gratuiti e controlli medici gratuiti, per garantire benessere e opportunità.
Abbiamo già 6 famiglie e bambini a Mirissa interessati a partecipare — e questo è solo l’inizio! 🌱

🇱🇰 2. Continuare a seguire le nostre lezioni di inglese
Visiteremo l’orfanotrofio di Oba Mama (Matara) e il Girls Village (Weligama) per vedere come stanno andando le lezioni — progetti di Medacross e sostenuti anche grazie alla vostra generosità 💛

🩹 3. Dalla Svizzera allo Sri Lanka: costruire un ponte di cura
Ci stiamo preparando a portare in Sri Lanka materiale medico per la gestione delle ferite, e stiamo provando a creare una connessione con il District General Hospital di Matara per sostenere i bisogni sanitari locali.

Insieme continuiamo a costruire piccoli passi verso educazione, salute e speranza.

Our next journey is about to begin, and here’s what’s on the program:

🏫 1. Laying the foundations for our own dream: the HIRU After School Center
A safe place where children can learn, play and grow.
A space that offers English classes, free meals, and free medical check-ups to ensure well-being and opportunity.
We already have 6 families and children in Mirissa interested in joining — and this is just the beginning! 🌱

🇱🇰 2. Follow-up on our English classes
We’ll visit the Orphanage of Oba Mama (Matara) and the Girls Village (Weligama) to see how the English lessons are going — collaboration with Medacross. Projects powered by your generosity 💛

🩹 3. From Switzerland to Sri Lanka: building a bridge of care
We’re preparing to bring medical materials for wound management to Sri Lanka, and we’re trying to create a connection with the District General Hospital in Matara to support local healthcare needs.

Together, we keep building small steps toward education, health, and hope.

Our Projects:

Together with our colleagues at MedAcross, we are forming a strong partnership to further develop the project by joining forces and enhancing its long-term impact!

— The Orphanage – The Matara Orphanage:

Just a few kilometres from the Girls’ Village in Kekanadura lies the Oba Mama Boys’ Orphanage. Founded in 1990 by a Japanese foundation, the orphanage was supported by this organisation until funding was suddenly withdrawn in 2018.

The facility houses up to 25 children who have been entrusted to the care of the Matara Court until they reach the age of 18. These children are either orphans or have been abandoned by their families. Many of them come from the streets and have disabilities, and many grow up in extreme poverty, living in makeshift shelters between fields or under tin roofs.

The boys are cared for by four rotating assistants and attend the local school until the age of 15. After this, they undertake two years of vocational training in Matara to prepare them for independent life.

The orphanage operates under the mandate of local courts and collaborates closely with Buddhist monks from the Oba Mama Association, who oversee daily activities. The structure is basic and poorly equipped, and is currently inadequate to meet the needs of the growing number of children.

—The Girls' Village – Ibbawale (near Weligama), Sri Lanka

HIRU has chosen to support the Girls’ Village in In Ibbawale (near Weligama), a humanitarian project that began in 2004, following the devastating tsunami that struck the southern coast of Sri Lanka. In response to the emergency, Specchio dei Tempiinitiated the construction of a village to provide healthcare assistance to affected families. Over the years, the project evolved into a shelter dedicated to girls who are victims of abuse or abandonment, in collaboration with the Matara Court.

Today, the Village is a safe haven where young girls can grow up in a protected, peaceful, and nurturing environment. Welcomed from early childhood, the girls are supported until they reach adulthood through an educational and developmental path that focuses on their well-being and future independence. Life in the village is deeply rooted in Buddhist culture, with local monks actively involved in daily management and in constant dialogue with MedAcross, the Turin-based NGO currently running the project. This model of care and support has already transformed the lives of dozens of girls, and continues to do so thanks to the commitment of those, like HIRU, who believe in a fairer and more inclusive future for all.
