Rainbows4Children Regular updates and information on progress at the Nicolas Robinson School in Mekele, Ethiopia We need more sponsors for the school to be fully sustainable.

The Nicolas Robinson School educates 1400 children, from Kindergarten to Grade 12 (age 18). More than half the children at the school are sponsored by individuals and companies in Ethiopia and overseas. In cooperation with the TDVA, Rainbows4children started construction of the Nicolas Kindergarten in 2004, and in September 2005 it opened to 160 children, aged 4-6 years. It was extended in 2006 an

d now it has capacity for 240 children. Since then we have landscaped the gardens and built a play area and eating room so they have more space for learning. In 2006, construction started on the Primary School. Over the next 4 years, the school and facilities were expanded to accomodate 640 students from grades 1-8 (ages 6-14). In addition a large library, IT training room, music/meeting room, sports ground and eating room were all constructed. A computer room and laboratory are also provided. Construction on the secondary school started in 2011, and in September 2012 the Secondary School opened with 75 grade 9 students, 36 of whom had graduated from our own Primary School. In 2019, the Secondary School has a total of 360 students in grades 9 to 12. Students benefit from best in class facilities including excellent science laboratories teaching practical science and can complete their primary and secondary education at the Nicolas Robinson School.
Equipment for the school is funded by donors and is supplied mainly by local businesses in Mekele and in Addis Ababa, including workshops where many people with disabilties are working. In 2010 we equipped the school classrooms and library with 22,000 books
In 2017 we started the Nicolas College. The project objective is to get disadvantaged and special needs children into decent work. This pioneering project serves students from the Nicolas Robinson School and other family members, as well as the community. It focuses on supporting students with learning or physical disabilities to enable them to have meaningful employment. Feedback/market research from local enterprises has identified the hotel/catering sector as a priority need as well as many requests for further education and skills improvement in computer use and business start-up. In particular, our vision is to ensure that in the future children with special needs will find decent work, will no longer be hidden away from society, forced into early marriage or obliged to do degrading work.

💛 Updates from the Nicolas Robinson School – Rainbows4children
The new school year is off to a great start, and our students and teachers are working harder than ever!
🎥 Watch our short video update:
https://youtu.be/R51zUyfc2q4
This year has continued with great results:
✅ Grade 8: 100% pass rate in the national exams!
✅ Grade 12:
• 80% pass rate in Natural Science
• 40% pass rate in Social Science — and we’re the only non-government school in Mekelle offering this option.
Even though Grade 12 results were lower than our usual high standards, it’s important to remember that the national average pass rate in Ethiopia this year was only 8%.
Our students who passed have already been assigned to universities and begun their studies. Others who just missed the pass mark, and they are now attending special learning-support programmes at Tigray universities. Thanks to a generous donor, we’re also helping the remaining students re-sit exams privately or start diploma programmes at local colleges — all of which can lead to degree-level study later on.
After the challenges of the war and the pandemic, our students are finally able to follow a full academic schedule again. Teachers are focusing strongly on literacy and numeracy to help everyone regain confidence in their learning. We’ve also introduced after-school homework sessions for students who don’t have a quiet place to study at home — and it’s already making a big difference.
Education is more than exams.
Our after-school clubs — sports, music, art, drama and more — are now fully active again, helping students rebuild their confidence, teamwork, and happiness.
Our vocational programmes continue to grow:
During this year more than 120 students have already benefitted from out IT and cooking classes. Both courses include entrepreneurship workshops, helping students gain the confidence and practical skills to find jobs or start small businesses of their own.
Many children still need sponsorship so they can study in the safe and supportive environment of the Nicolas Robinson School. Sponsorship truly changes lives — giving students the chance for a brighter future.
👉 If you are able, please consider sponsoring a student today.
