Stop Killer Robots

Stop Killer Robots We are the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, a coalition of non-governmental organizations working to stop autonomy in weapons systems.

Launched on 23 April 2013, the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots is a coalition of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working for a pre-emptive and comprehensive ban on fully autonomous weapons. These are weapons that would select and fire on targets on their own, without any human intervention. Over the past decade, the expanded use of armed remotely-piloted aerial vehicles or drones has dramatic

ally changed warfare, bringing new humanitarian and legal challenges. Now rapid advances in technology are resulting in efforts to develop fully autonomous weapons

Allowing life or death decisions to be made by machines crosses a fundamental moral line and poses a major challenge to the protection of civilians as well as serious questions about compliance with international human rights and humanitarian law. AI military systems are only as reliable as the data they are built on. If that data is biased, unlawfully collected, or derived from human rights violations, the consequences for civilians can be catastrophic.

At the informal exchanges on AI in the military domain at 🇺🇳 UN Geneva, Stop Killer Robots campaigners urged the international community to put the risks of harm to people, our dignity and autonomy, and our environment at the forefront of both their discussions on military AI and broader efforts to address the dangers posed by the rise of AI and autonomy in the use of force.

⚠️ The stakes could not be higher. Machines cannot and should not be trusted with life-and-de*th decisions.

Palantir is not a neutral technology company - its AI and data software systems are used by militaries and governments linked to serious human rights abuses. ❌

Giving Palantir a seat at the table does not strengthen the governance process. The actors shaping the rules cannot be the same ones profiting from the absence of them.

As the informal exchanges on AI in the military domain concluded at 🇺🇳, Stop Killer Robots raised that humanitarian and ethical concerns are often not strongly reflected in the technical discussions that take place in meetings like these.

Our campaign reminded delegations that there is currently a huge amount of public concern about AI in warfare:
📍 with chatbot tools people use in their everyday lives being linked to wars causing civilian casualties and destruction;
📍 companies we use to send our emails being linked to a campaign assessed to be genocide;
📍and shocking reports of the automation of violence and of dehumanisation through digital tools that process data from the mass surveillance of people into outputs that are used for making lethal strikes.

⚠️ We strongly encouraged the international community to put the risks of harm to people, our dignity and autonomy, and our environment at the forefront of both their discussions on military AI and broader efforts to address the dangers posed by the rise of AI and autonomy in the use of force.

🗣️ "AI systems are not moral agents and cannot make moral or ethical decisions." says Dr. Elke Schwarz of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control (ICRAC) at

Handing targeting decisions to machines strips people of their humanity. Victims are reduced to data points. Survivors have no one to hold accountable.

Digital dehumanisation is not an abstract concern. It is happening right now.

❗The international community must act now before the harm becomes irreversible.

Verity Coyle with Human Rights Watch takes the floor at the informal exchanges on AI in the military domain on what states should do to promote compliance with international law and protect civilians from the risks AI poses.

Our campaign is calling on states to agree to an immediate moratorium on using AI as the basis for targeting decisions, and to be transparent about how AI is already being used in military operations.

❗ The international community must act now before the harm becomes irreversible.

Hear from Dr. Ilia Siatitsa with Privacy International on why privacy and data protection must be considered as core human rights obligations integral to any meaningful regulatory framework on the use of AI in the military domain.

Our campaign members are reminding states of these obligations at the informal exchanges on AI in the military domain this week UN Geneva

🚨 AI military systems are only as reliable as the data they are built on. If that data is biased, unlawfully collected, or derived from human rights violations, the consequences for civilians can be catastrophic.

The stakes could not be higher. Machines cannot and should not be trusted with life-and-death decisions.

🗣️ "The challenges posed by military AI cannot be resolved by technology. They demand a renewed commitment to human-centred values, international solidarity and the sanctity of life... Let us choose wisely and well -- with courage, conviction and steadfast commitment to our humanity."

That's the message Jonathan Frerichs of delivered to the informal exchanges on AI in the military domain at on behalf of the Interfaith Working Group of our campaign. ✌️

❗AI must never decide who lives and who dies. States must take urgent action to stop and prevent digital dehumanisation and automated harm.

⚠️ Digital dehumanisation is not an abstract concern - it's happening right now in conflicts around the world.

Handing targeting decisions to machines strips people of their humanity. Victims are reduced to data points, while survivors have no one to hold accountable.

This week at the informal exchanges on AI in the military domain at the UN 🇺🇳, Stop Killer Robots campaigners are calling on states to act urgently to stop and prevent digital dehumanisation and automated harm and ensure meaningful human control over the use of force.

🗣️ Stay tuned for updates from campaigners in Geneva!

❗Governments are increasingly using AI systems to identify and attack targets in conflict. This is not a distant risk, it is happening now. We refuse to accept this as normal. AI must never decide who lives and who dies.

We're at the informal exchanges on AI in the military domain at the UN 🇺🇳 in Geneva this week.

Stop Killer Robots is calling on states to:
📍 agree to an immediate moratorium on using AI as the basis for targeting decisions, and
📍 be transparent about how AI is already being used in military operations.

⚠️ The international community must act now before the harm becomes irreversible. Stay tuned for more updates from our campaigners in Geneva over the next few days.
