M.P. Shah Hospital's sustainability journey began in 2018 with a single step. This month, we are recognizing their impact as the first hospital in Africa to achieve 𝗝𝗖𝗜–𝗚𝗦𝗖 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 🏆

Their story shows that transformation comes from consistent, incremental actions where sustainability is understood as an extension of care.

𝗕𝗠𝗝 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 recently published the outcomes of two global technical meetings that the Geneva Sustainability Centre co-chaired in 2025, convened by the World Health Organization (WHO)'s 𝘈𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 (ATACH).

Guided by the International Hospital Federation's 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹, these meetings brought together leaders from around the world to explore the different forms of leadership needed to advance sustainable healthcare systems.

Healthcare contributes nearly 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, hospitals and health systems are increasingly feeling the impacts of climate change.

Last week, GSC’s Carmen Menéndez and Renzo Costa participated in the biannual congress of the Asociación Colombiana de Hospitales y Clínicas - ACHC in Bogota where they delivered a session titled “𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚”. The session included a panel of experts and led to a rich discussion with the audience about advancing sustainability in healthcare in Colombia.
