In 2022, Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá's (FSFB) director, Dr Henry Gallardo established an institutional policy to advance sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon healthcare. As part of this policy, FSFB has reduced the environmental impact of its operating rooms by eliminating desflurane – an anaesthetic gas with high global warming potential.

Led by anaesthesiologists and backed by strong institutional leadership, the hospital used a phased approach to transition toward low-carbon alternatives, proving that sustainable practice and quality care go hand in hand.

Dr Henry Gallardo's journey shows what is possible when hospital leaders take ownership of sustainability. They are the primary drivers of change and therefore uniquely positioned to act.

The surgery service nursing team and the professionals overseeing post-operative hospitalization collaborated on a project to tackle this at Mútua Terrassa Hospital. They promoted environmentally sustainable actions focused on plastic and paper recycling as well as the reuse of surgical textiles.

Last week, GSC participated in the second edition of HELIX in Mexico City.

𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗫 focuses on health education, learning, and innovation, and María del Carmen Menéndez Calzada presented the role of simulations in sustainability leadership, using the example of the Carbon Emissions Learning Lab. Carmen also moderated a session on planetary health and leadership.

It was a great opportunity for networking with Mexican and Latin American healthcare and education organizations!
