European Doula Network (EDN)

European Doula Network (EDN) European Doula Network - Connecting, Supporting, Informing European Doula Network, 2023

While doulas have worked independently for many years all around Europe, growth in our numbers and increasing interest in our services has prompted the formation of a network where we can support and learn from each other and exchange ideas. The European Doula Network (EDN) was officially established in 2011 to connect doula organisations across Europe and share a common Code of Ethics. Doulas may

support individuals, parents and families in their choices throughout pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting or during other life-changing periods, such as bereavement and death. A member association, training course, or friend of the EDN agrees to the following definition of the role and ethics of a doula:

• Doulas provide emotional and practical support to individuals, parents and families.

• Doulas do not perform clinical tasks, make medical diagnoses or give advice.

• Doulas support informed choice and informed consent, without directing any decision-making.

• Doulas treat clients, families, colleagues and all other professionals with respect and courtesy.

• Doulas conduct themselves with integrity and transparency with respect to their experience, skills, and boundaries.

• Doulas respect the privacy of clients and hold in confidence all information in accordance with GDPR.

• Doulas engage in continuing personal and professional development.

• Doulas contribute to networks of care in local and wider communities.

Olá! I’m Carla Silveira, and I am so looking forward to connecting with you at in Lisbon.

My journey into birth work began with my own two births—the first, a cesarean that left me with deep, searching questions, and the second, a natural birth that felt like a profound reclaiming. Those experiences called me into this work, and in 2006, I completed my training, without knowing I was stepping into my calling.

For the past 20 years, I have walked alongside women and families as a doula, perinatal educator, and mentor.
My work is rooted in wholehearted presence, deep respect, and supporting conscious, informed choices that honor each family's unique values.

Believing that support should be accessible to all, in 2021 I co-founded Associação .
Through Materlua, we provide vital perinatal support, including dedicated social projects that wrap around women in vulnerable situations.

I believe deeply in women’s autonomy, the transformative power of birth, and every woman's capacity to write her own story.

For me, birth work is a continuous search for deeper listening, greater meaning, and more human ways of caring for life.

Whether you are a midwife, a researcher, or a fellow birth worker, I believe our shared dedication to families is what connects us all.

I would love to meet you in Lisbon to share insights and stories.

Olá! I’m Ânia Freitas, and I can't wait to welcome you to in Lisbon!

For over a year and a half, I’ve been a proud volunteer with the European Doula Network (EDN) in the Social Media team. I’ll be on the ground capturing the energy and connections of the congress, so if you see me with my phone, please come say hi and let’s grab a wee photo together for the EDN grid!

When I’m not behind the screen, I am working at a local homeless charity as a Finance Officer, or with my Doula ‘’hat’’ as I’m a birth and postnatal doula based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but my roots remain firmly in Portugal where I serve as
Vice President of Doular - Associação Portuguesa de Doulas (APD) an EDN member association.
apd was created by doulas for doulas! A safe space for exchanges, sharing and support, promoting achievements and renewal.

Doular - APD, also exists to support and elevate the doula profession, promoting its recognition and future legal status in Portugal.

For me, ICM is the ultimate place to bridge these worlds—bringing together my work in Belfast, my passion for Doular - APD, and my love for the EDN community.

Whether you are a midwife, a researcher, or a fellow doula, let’s connect and celebrate how we can work together to elevate maternal care.

Drop a comment below, send a DM, or catch me in the hallways. See you in Lisbon!

Hi! I’m Michèle Stratmann, and I am thrilled to be connecting with you all for in Lisbon!

With over two decades of dedication to the birth world, my passion for supporting families burns just as brightly today as it did when I started. I became a doula in 2001, later stepping into the role of a doula trainer in Switzerland in 2006. As a mom of five grown-up children, I know first-hand the profound impact of compassionate care.

My deep love for this community led me to co-found both the Swiss Doula Association and the European Doula Network (EDN), helping to shape the very network that brings so many of us together today.

I really love what I do(ula), and I’ve been burning since the beginning - for family health issues, for creating a birth- and birthing culture that empowers and supports women, future moms and dads, babies and their families.

When it comes to women-centred care, my answer is always: teamwork.

I am a massive advocate for strong, respectful collaboration between doulas, midwives, doctors, and healthcare professionals.

Together, we create the ultimate safety net for families.

Whether you are a midwife, a fellow doula, or a maternity care professional, ICM is the perfect place for us to strengthen these vital bridges.

I would love to meet you, share stories, and talk about how we can elevate teamwork in birth work.

Hi, I'm Debbie Mitchell — and if you care about doulas, midwives, and what happens when they actually work together, let's talk.

I'm a doula and EDN Core-Organiser, and connecting people is pretty much what I live for. Not networking purely for the buzz — real, purposeful connection between doulas and the healthcare professionals who may work alongside them.

Back in 2023, I launched the first ever Doula Corner at XXIV in Paris with EDN inviting and — creating a space to bring doulas into the conversation at one of the world's biggest women's health conferences. It was a huge moment. And it opened doors ('doula' was included in the Cape Town FIGO Congress registration).

Since then I've been deep in EDN’s community research, learning about the perceptions of doulas from the people who work with us every day. And now I'm bringing something really exciting to in Lisbon — the voices of midwives themselves, sharing their experiences of working with doulas in hospitals, homes and communities.

Midwives' perspectives on doulas matter.

They don't always get heard and we’re trying to change this.

If you're heading to , working in maternity care, researching birth support, or just passionate about the power of collaboration — I would love to meet you.

Drop me a message.

Let's build something that brings the circle closer around women-centred care.

Women feel better,
when we care together.
