The Lukuru Foundation is raising funds for a rescue mission of African Grey Parrots.
On Aug 19, 2024, a cargo of illegally poached African Grey parrots was intercepted at the Istanbul airport in Turkey. Our mission is to bring these birds back to their home, the Democratic Republic of Congo, rehabilitate and release them into the wild.
The African Grey Parrot is fighting for survival. The international pet trade has brought this incredible bird to the brink of extinction and every rescue mission is a win in our fight to save this amazing bird!
We are the Project for the Protection of Parrots in Congo. We are dedicated to saving the African Grey Parrot from extinction. Our work is to stop the poaching trade in Congo and rescue, rehabilitate, and return to the wild poached parrots. The parrot trade is brutal with over 75% mortality rate for parrots. 2 out of every 3 birds captured by poachers die of starvation, abuse, dehydration, and neglect.
We have all been delighted, inspired, and awed by this intelligent, compassionate, and creative bird. The African Grey parrot touches our lives with joy as a pet in our home, a video on the internet, or a visit to the zoo. But now this wonderful bird needs our help to survive. Helping us make this rescue mission possible is a huge success in protecting this special species.
Your contribution will make it possible for us to transport these parrots to the sanctuary for rehabilitation, to build holding cages for the birds while they recover, and to support a care team of veterinarians and caretakers to help the parrots heal.
