Parliamentary Committee engages UNHCR to inform the review of legislation related to refugee protection and inclusion in Zambia
Today, the Government of the Republic of Zambia 🇿🇲, through the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Human Rights, and Governance, engaged with the UNHCR Zambia Multi-Country Office (ZAMCO) on matters concerning the protection, rights, and welfare of refugees and asylum-seekers in Zambia. The engagement reflects Government’s continued leadership and oversight in advancing inclusive and rights-based policies for forcibly displaced populations.
During the session, led by UNHCR’s Officer-in-Charge, Ms. Helen Mebrahtu, UNHCR shared technical insights and recommendations in support of Government-led efforts to strengthen the legal and policy framework governing refugee protection and inclusion. UNHCR commended the Government for its longstanding open-door policy, which demonstrates Zambia’s commitment to shared humanity and its role as a safe haven for those fleeing conflict and persecution 🤝.
Discussions with the Committee underscored the importance of accelerating policy and legal reforms, alongside the implementation of programmes that promote refugee inclusion and self-reliance. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that protection is complemented by opportunities for refugees to contribute meaningfully to national and local development efforts.
This engagement highlights Parliament’s critical role in shaping policies that uphold human rights, dignity, and social cohesion. It further reinforces the collective responsibility of Government and partners to ensure that Zambia’s refugee response remains compassionate, inclusive, and sustainable 🕊️.
Together, Government, Parliament, and partners continue to strengthen Zambia’s legacy as a beacon of hope and regional solidarity in the face of forced displacement 🌍.
