An update from Lwiro: the Ebola outbreak in our region now appears to be under control, although the disease continues to affect other parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the same time, the intensity of the conflict around us has eased in recent days, allowing our team to move beyond the confinement endured during the most difficult period.
Throughout these extraordinarily difficult months, the true strength of Lwiro has been its people. Our 60 dedicated staff members continued to work every day, putting the wellbeing of 278 rescued animals above their own comfort. Their courage, resilience, and commitment ensured that Lwiro continued to be a place of safety, healing, and hope, even in the darkest of times.
Life here remains incredibly difficult. The humanitarian crisis is far from over, and daily challenges continue to affect our team, their families, the surrounding communities, and the sanctuary itself. Ensuring everyone’s safety and securing essential food, medical supplies, and other necessities for the sanctuary remain daily challenges.
We also want to express how deeply grateful we are to everyone who has stood by Lwiro during these past months. Your support has reminded us that we are not alone and has helped ensure that, no matter the circumstances, every rescued animal continues to receive the care they deserve.
