Why Does Jehovah Allow Time to Pass Before the 144,000 Are Complete?
Imagine a government preparing a special cabinet. The number of positions is fixed, but the appointments are made carefully, one person at a time, according to the ruler’s requirements. The fact that the positions have existed for a long time does not mean they must already be filled.
Something similar helps us understand the 144,000.
The Bible identifies the 144,000 as a limited group who are “bought from the earth” to be with Christ in heaven and serve as kings and priests.
— Revelation 7:4; 14:1-4; 5:9, 10.
But why would some still be chosen after Christianity has existed for centuries?
Because Jehovah determines who belongs to this group according to his own purpose and timing. The Bible says: “Jehovah knows those who belong to him.” — 2 Timothy 2:19.
Interestingly, Paul referred to anointed Christians who would still be alive during Christ’s presence: “We the living who survive to the presence of the Lord…”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17.
This indicates that a remnant of anointed Christians would remain on earth for a period before receiving their heavenly reward.
This should not be confused with the popular idea of a secret “rapture,” in which all faithful Christians supposedly disappear to heaven. The Bible presents two distinct hopes.
The 144,000 receive the heavenly assignment of ruling with Christ.
— Revelation 20:6.
But faithful humans in general have the wonderful hope of living forever on a restored earth. Jesus said: “Happy are the mild-tempered, since they will inherit the earth.”
— Matthew 5:5. Psalm 37:29.
similarly says: “The righteous will possess the earth, and they will live forever on it.”
So the passing of time does not mean Jehovah has forgotten his purpose. Rather, it demonstrates that the selection of those who will rule with Christ remains under Jehovah’s perfect authority.
The question is not, “Why has it taken so long?” The more important question is: “Am I living in harmony with the Kingdom that Jehovah has established?”
