La Société Promotion Grand-Pré was thrilled to host a very special Book Launch on Saturday. This launch featured two extraordinary works that highlight Acadian history from two very different, yet deeply connected perspectives. To celebrate, we’re offering an exclusive 10% discount on both titles with promo code BOOKLAUNCH10.

Dictionnaire du français acadien
A landmark work by Yves Cormier, this dictionary places Acadian French at the centre of the conversation; not as a footnote to Quebec French, but as a vibrant linguistic tradition in its own right. Cormier documents the richness and vitality of Acadian vocabulary with remarkable care: noting frequency of use, regional variations, historical origins, and first written attestations. Each definition is brought to life through thoughtfully chosen examples and quotations, inviting readers to experience Acadian French in its natural context. This is more than a reference book. This is a celebration of a living language and an essential resource for anyone who wants to understand and appreciate the Acadian linguistic landscape.

John Winslow at Grand-Pré
Jonathan Fowler and Earle Lockerby present a powerful, meticulously annotated edition of John Winslow’s 1755 journal: a firsthand account of one of the most consequential moments in Acadian history. Supported by maps, illustrations, essays, and extensive contextual notes, this volume offers an invaluable window into the forces that reshaped Atlantic Canada and the enduring legacy of the Acadian people.

These two books, one exploring the heart of Acadian language, the other illuminating a pivotal chapter of Acadian history, form a powerful pairing for those who are passionate about Acadian history.

Use promo code BOOKLAUNCH10 to receive 10% off both titles until June 12th.

Come discover, learn, and connect with the stories that continue to shape Grand‑Pré and its people!

Book Launch Highlight: Dictionnaire du français acadien

While most books on the distinctive features of French in Canada focus primarily on Quebec and only briefly mention Acadian specifics, Yves Cormier has chosen to make them the central focus of his dictionary. He strives to demonstrate their current vitality, nuanced by indications of frequency of use, and includes data on the geographical distribution of each word, its first written attestation, its historical origins, and its evolution within the Acadian landscape.

The definitions are further illustrated by numerous examples drawn from recent works, and the judicious selection of quotations, some of which are quite lengthy, serves as a gentle invitation to become familiar with a wealth of Acadian words in their natural context. All of this contributes to fostering in the reader a contagious affinity for this Acadian variety of the French language, which this dictionary helps to better understand and appreciate.

Book Launch Highlight: John Winslow at Grand-Pré

John Winslow was one of the most significant American military leaders of the generations before George Washington. Winslow’s career carried him to the corners of the Atlantic world, soldiers flocked to his banner, and his exploits were celebrated in song. But instead of creating a country, he destroyed one. Following the successful siege of the French Fort Beauséjour at Chignecto in 1755, Nova Scotia governor Charles Lawrence ordered Winslow to deport Acadian families from their settlements in the middle of the province. Winslow found these instructions both surprising and disturbing, but he followed them, recording his actions in his journal.

The 1755 deportations of the Acadians forever altered the social and political landscape of Atlantic Canada and contributed to the unique character of the Acadian and Cajun communities that developed in their aftermath. In ‘John Winslow at Grand-Pré’ Jonathan Fowler and Earle Lockerby have faithfully transcribed and extensively annotated Winslow’s eye-witness account of this seminal event of 18th-century North American history. Supported by maps, illustrations and extensive contextualizing essays and appendices, this new presentation of Winslow’s 1755 journal provides an invaluable window on those troubled times.
