Kri's movie club pick today! I generally don't like watching any sort of violence in entertainlent but I've noticed I make a LOT of exceptions with "Kri movies" which bring me so much nostaligic joy, such as this one. Kri brought home this rental from the video store in 1998. It was perhaps the only German movie we had ever watched at that point of our lives and we were instantly taken by it. We marveled at how magnificently filmed it was with the animation sequences, intense pace, colors, a pioneering non-linear story at that time, and the upbeat electronic soundtrack some songs which are sung by Franka Potente...Lola! I brought the soundtrack dubbed onto cassette to Europe in 2001 and listened to it repeatedly on my walkman (😅) during my first trip to Germany, and stumbled upon Lola's costume in a museum in Berlin. This VHS movie which was purchased soonafter our first viewing, its soundtrack and certain German lines from it, became known in our household and stayed with us for decades. De tasche. De tasche. De tasche. De tasche. If you haven't seen this shining jewel, revel in 1 hour and 21 minutes of historical 90s film making artistry.

Because of Kri's aptitude for understanding computers, we got the internet in 1994, before everybody else. This of course gave me a wicked addiction to internet chatlines during highschool, with which I nearly failed all my classes! I however knew nothing of hacking. Kri was the tech guy in our house who spent his entire life in a variety of Tech jobs (after John Blumberg Softball Complex Groundskeeper and Extra Foods Produce Boy. 🤣) One day in 1995, Kri brought home this movie and in spite of his disdain for how they showed the hacking scenes, over the years we STILL adored this movie with its incredible electronic soundtrack, amazing 90s raver wardrobe, believable plot and interesting characters. A standalone 90s classic for sure, it is still a marvelous delight to watch now.

The next selection for my beloved late brother Kri's Movie Club is the sequel to Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer! I didn't remember ANYTHING about this golden piece of 80s fantasy. Grace Jones (of Bond villainess fame) plays a spectacular warrior, Olivia D'abo (the hippie sister in The Wonder Years) plays a convincing prophetic princess, and Wilt Chamberlain (the NBA hall of famer) at 7"1 is a delight to watch as her bodyguard merely stepping off what looks like a child's sized horse as he makes Arnold look like an average sized guy. This one is more aimed at kids, less gory and more magical than the first, but equally wonderful.

SHOCKER!! I just discovered Kri's beloved wrestling buddy Andre from The Princess Bride plays Dagoth in Conan!? Anybody want a peanut??? Another unexpected synchronicity. Kri continues to give us movie trivia, across the veil. ❤️

Last week my friend Shawn Fedora recounted a conversation he had years ago where Kri defended the greatness of the 1982 movie Conan the Barbarian starring a young Arnold Schwartzenegger. This made me laugh because Arnie was just one of the many action heroes Kri brought into our very young lives. (For example, I don't think kids were supposed to watch The Running Man before they were 9 years old. 🤣) In spite of the barbaric gore, we adored Conan and still now it is fun to watch, especially for Arnie's badass war paint while going to save the princess (who doesn't want to be saved) and James Earl Jones as the very convincing snake sorceror cult leader Thulsa Doom, in his first major villain role... where you actually see him act and not just hear his voice! Conan the Destroyer will be next week. 🥰

The Princess Bride was a classic we often quoted and referred to, but Kri naturally had a speciial place in his heart for Andre the Giant. So this is the quote that made it on the wall at Kri-Fest, our fabulously Kri-esque celebration of life for him. In my eulogy that day, I spoke of Kri's strong influence on us as children and a speech I wrote in French in grade 3 about wrestling, for which I won 3rd place in the school division! I still have Kri's Piledriver WWF Cassette tape, just looking for a tape player to relive that... glory. 🤣 We always hated the H***y Tonk Man, but loved Elvis so this song goes out to my mom who liked him because he looked like Elvis. And here is another poster from Kri-Fest... it's funny how these seemingly unrelated things all line up together. What an unforgettable character, my brother. I'll never run out of things to say about him, it's just my aversion to social media that keeps it slow moving! ❤️

In Kri's stuff I found this Bruce Lee DVD The Warrior's Journey that I had never seen before. It has scenes from Game of Death found only in the mid 90s!! Game of Death is the unfinished movie Bruce was working on when he died, so I remember Game of Death being the worst of all his movies, with another actor wearing big sunglasses to try to cover the fact it was somebody else. The Warrior's Journey told me why. American producers "finished" it with only a small bit of footage that Bruce Lee actually meant to be in the movie. Bruce Lee had written the (totally different) script, directed, took on 5 or 6 other roles, hired his own highly accomplished martial arts students as the actors and after he crossed the veil the script and footage were lost for 20 years. So what should've been his best and most thoughtful movie, during a time where he promoted a martial arts style of "no-style" (which I learned from his wife in the doc is likely why he chose to wear that funny yellow one piece track suit) ended up becoming a bit of a joke due to Hollywood producers. Not a unique story about Hollywood, but an interesting and cool story about Bruce Lee, one of Kri's heroes. I don't usually watch documentaries about celebrities but Bruce is an exception."Be like water, my friend."

This week it took me 3 days to finish Empire Strikes Back because while watching it in HD for the first time ever (instead of Kri's old VHS tapes we watched a thousand times 🤣) I finally spotted the ship Kri had as a kid!!!! It was the "Rebel Transport" ship, and I did try googling it in the past and never found it so thought it was some no name knock off ship, (kinda like the Lolo Ball I got that was supposed to be a Pogo Ball lol) but no. It just happened to be a very unpopular ship because of how expensive it was at the time, $29.99!!! I remember playing with Chewy on this ship around 1985, in Kri's room before we moved from our first house on Rannock. So my entire viewing of the movie became, watching for the Rebel Transport ship, noting the scenes inside it, forgetting, rewinding, and on. I also spotted Darth Vader's pod in the same five minutes as the Transporter, another ship Kri owned in the 90s. A coincidence??? I think not. I ask for signs and I get them. Like a Jedi asking for Obi Wan's guidance. 🥰

Here's a link to more Kri movies and music, but I'm still not done adding to it yet! https://youtube.com/?si=0HgrzfHpILe92mFG

Totally inappropriate for the season, we watched this one of Kri's faves last week. Back when Tom Cruise was playing bratty dream boats, Brad Pitt at his dreamy prime, Kirsten Dunst in easily her best performance at such a young age, this movie has held up very well over the years. In spite of the many movies Kri had, the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles was the only book set Kri bought as a teenager, which made it very convenient for Nan and I to steal and quickly become obsessed! For movie club last year, we watched a few episodes of the new Interview With the Vampire series, and due to our loyalty to the novels and this original movie, we all absolutely hated it. 🤣
