Received this Note from Jen in Sierra Leone today: We called a community meeting today to discuss the tech voc training. There were 50 in attendance including the chairperson, the assistant town chief and the town chief as well as Finda and the headmaster. 40 of the attendees were women. At the end the women asked to sing this song: every woman must learn a skill to be able to sustain themself. If you don't learn a skill, you'll always be begging people and that is not good.

While in Sierra Leone, Jen strengthens body, mind and soul; and she is developing a young team with her.

Our very small charity has been fortunate in having a local Winnipeg teacher volunteer, at her own expense, to spend 10 weeks at our orphanage and school in Sierra Leone. Just yesterday she started posting updates of her experiences on our website and to her blog. We are excited at hearing first hand what is happening on the ground to what we support so far away. I thought you might be interested too, as it demonstrates that there are pockets of much good in a troubled world.
Here are the links to Jen Nicholson's experiences. Please follow them for the next ten weeks.

The Sierra Leone Action Mission (SLAM) committee is a small, but growing group of volunteers dedicated to making a difference. While thanking you for your support of the orphanage and school we will introduce our team, one at a time.
Jennifer Nicholson is a high school teacher in Winnipeg’s inner city, where she has spent 18 years working mainly with newcomers to Canada. She designs and teaches math and science courses for English as an Additional Language (EAL) students, fostering accessible and supportive learning environments.
Her passion for education, justice, and adventure has led her to volunteer teaching in remote places like Mauritania and South Sudan. Jennifer holds a Master’s degree in Peace Education (2015) and is currently pursuing a permaculture design certificate to better serve communities both locally and globally in sustainable ways.
While researching volunteer opportunities for her upcoming sabbatical, Jennifer was drawn to SLAM’s mission of fostering positive peace through building local capacity—a vision closely aligned with her values. She is inspired by Christ’s living presence in the world and seeks to reflect that hope with authenticity.

In an impoverished country like Sierra Leone, education is a luxury to be cherished. It is a pathway to a better life. This is impressed upon the children at an early age as the children at the Pearl Dudek International Academy celebrate their graduation.

The Sierra Leone Action Mission (SLAM) committee is a small, but growing group of volunteers dedicated to making a difference. While thanking you for your support of the orphanage and school we will introduce our team, one at a time. Please meet Maureen Ferley.

She has been involved with Sierra Leone Action Mission since its inception. She is account manager for the Pearl Dudek Centre for Children in Koidu, Sierra Leone. Good financial stewardship is a driving focus that has seen us through the planning, building, and maintenance of our Pearl Dudek International Academy (currently K-6) and the new Pearl Dudek Centre for Children dormitory that houses our 38 plus orphans. Maureen holds a Masters of Education and a Bachelor of Music. She is a lifelong learner and loves helping her family and community.
