The Northeast Red Watershed District (NRWD), previously the Cooks Creek Conservation District, was established in 1979 as a partnership between the Province of Manitoba and local Rural Municipalities to address local soil and water issues.

2026 NRWD Tree Giveaway was a huge success! All the hard work our staff put in to planning and preparing for the giveaway has paid off. Almost 200 landowners within the district got to go home with beautiful trees 🌲🌳

Thank you to Bilan Tree Farm and Nursery and Tree Time for the wonderful trees.

Free Well Water Testing for E.Coli & Coliform! 💧

The Northeast Red Watershed District is offering free well water testing for landowners within our district boundaries. Please ensure you are within the district boundaries before applying.

To qualify you must submit an application form to us either through email ([email protected]) or in person. Access the application form on our website at northeastred.ca or we can send you a copy through email.

There are a limited number of free tests available so apply quickly! All remaining details will be provided on the application form.

Last week our staff volunteered at Manitoba Envirothon's Southeast Regional Event located at the Tourond Creek Discovery Center. We had a blast watching the students compete to make their way to provincials. Manitoba Envirothon is an amazing program that teaches students the importance of environmental science. Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible.

These photos show the same retention project 4 years apart. The top photo is the St. Genevieve Retention in 2022. The bottom photo is the retention in 2026. You can see the natural pond in both photos. The retention has established strong wetland vegetation over these years. This vegetation increases water storage and creates natural habitat for many living things! ☀️🌱

Water retention projects like these help:
-enhance water storage;
-reduce peak flows, which can moderate the timing and volume of runoff and reduce negative impacts downstream;
-improve water quality by capturing sediments, nutrients, contaminants and pesticides;
-protect aquifers and enhance recharge; and
-increase wildlife habitat, biodiversity and ecosystem resilience🌾💧

Do you struggle with sitting water on your property? We have programs that may work for you!

The Northeast Red Watershed District offers multiple programs to help manage water and create resilience.

Water Retention- this program involves creating berms and structures to improve the management of surface water throughout a watershed to protect against flooding, drought and the impacts of climate change.

Wetland Conservation- we conserve level 1 and 2 wetlands and provide the property owner with an annual incentive.

Rain Garden- this program creates a unique way to manage runoff from downspouts, lawns, and driveways to reduce pollutants and restore natural infiltration.
