In this description, we wanted to give you a bit of background information as to how the Laura Milner White Project began, what it is, what it has accomplished since it was started, what projects we are involved in right now and how you can help and become involved! About the Laura Milner White Project:
Laura Milner White believed passionately that poverty had to be addressed. Laura had quietly be
en a big sister to two small girls for many years. The whole family including their father was very important to her. Laura connected with this family with little fanfare and quietly and effectively set out to improve their lives. Laura had unfinished business in the area of poverty. It was her wish to set up a mentorship program to expose core area children to life beyond the core. She wanted to establish a program that would mentor business leaders with pre-teen children and expose them to life opportunities. Laura hoped that others would help her to carry on this vision and show children living in poverty the importance of education. In the months before her untimely death, Laura talked about starting an initiative. It would encourage more people, adults and youth, to volunteer their time and to raise funds from the community to assist those volunteer efforts. Laura’s husband Peter, along with a group of her friends and family members continue to be inspired by her passion. The Laura Milner White Fund has been established at the Winnipeg Foundation in her memory by Laura's Committee (Peter and that group of friends). Since Laura Milner White Project was established in 2006 it has accomplished many things such as:
- Working with others to create an Inner City Soccer League and unique uniforms
- Offer individual musical instrument lessons to students in the inner city, including piano and guitar
- Find volunteers to be involved within schools in one-on-one mentor programs with students
- Establish a skating program, equipment all included
- Helped fund the Mulvey School play structure
- Establish the Fitness Center at Mulvey School
- Gowns for Grads
