🌑️ Extreme heat is here - stay safe this weekend!

While many of us are feeling the impact of this weekend's extreme temperatures, it's important to remember that heat is a year-round workplace hazard.

Workers in foundries, bakeries, laundries, commercial kitchens, manufacturing plants, and many other indoor workplaces are regularly exposed to high heat. Outdoor workers face even greater risks during the summer months.

Knowing how to recognize the signs of heat stress and taking preventive measures can help protect yourself and your coworkers.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported OHC's AGM last week!

We were honoured to host a discussion on psychological health and safety and the impact of peer support in the workplace. A special thank you to our guest speaker, Garvin Pinette, for sharing his inspiring story and how structured peer support is creating positive change for workers.

OHC remains committed to keeping workers, especially equity-deserving workers, at the centre of health and safety conversations.

πŸ•―οΈ Today, we recognize Injured Workers' Day and stand in solidarity with workers whose lives have been affected by workplace injuries, illnesses, and occupational diseases.

This day is a chance to reflect on the hard-won improvements in workplace health and safety achieved through collective action, and to bring awareness to the challenges many injured workers still face. Injured and ill workers must not be overlooked or forgotten.

Every worker deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect, especially after a workplace injury or illness. Justice for injured workers is not only a workplace issue. It is a human rights issue.

Prevention remains critical too. Our recent article examines why newcomers face greater risk when work isn't designed to be understood: https://ohcmb.ca/news/work-design-newcomers/ https://ohcmb.ca/news/work-design-newcomers/

Together, we can work toward safer workplaces and a fairer compensation system for injured workers.

Newcomer workers face higher workplace risks when systems are unclear and unsafe to navigate. Learn how work design, psychological safety, leadership, and workplace guardrails impact worker well-being and injury prevention.

Join us on June 17 for OHC's 2026 Annual General Meeting, where we'll focus on psychological health and safety in the workplace and the impact of peer support.

We're honoured to welcome Garvin Pinette as our guest speaker. Following a PTSD diagnosis after three traumatic incidents on the job, Garvin partnered with MGEU on the "Healthy Minds at Work Campaign" and went on to build Manitoba Corrections' first Peer Support Program and Trauma-Informed Care Committee.

We'll also share an update on our Learn & Connect initiative, OHC's peer-led support program for injured workers in Manitoba.

Lunch served at 11:30 a.m. Program runs 12:00–1:00 p.m.

Happy International Day of the Worker!

May 1 recognizes the workers who fought for the eight-hour day, safer workplaces, and the right to organize. The work is not done: many workers still face occupational illness, injury, and barriers to the protections they're owed. Today, and every day, OHC stands with workers. Together, we're building healthier, safer workplaces and communities for all.
