What if farmers could use 30% less fertilizer — without sacrificing yield?

That's not a hypothetical. That's what our crop research with Cascadia Seaw**d is showing.

At the Olds College Smart Farm, we've been testing seaw**d-based biostimulants on wheat, barley and canola. Crops are maintaining or even exceeding standard yields while using significantly less synthetic fertilizer.

This is exactly the kind of applied research the Smart Farm was built for: real crops, real conditions, real results.

“As a member of the AIVA Network, Olds College of Agriculture & Technology collaborates in a unified national effort to drive innovation across Canada's agricultural landscape. Together, we can better empower producers to expand their capacity, enhance their productivity and ensure long-term environmental and economic sustainability.” – Herman Simons, Manager Applied Research Smart Ag, Olds College

This summer, AIVA will collaborate with Olds College as a Validation Hub to test and validate promising agtech. Olds College implements digital agriculture technologies to crop and livestock production to investigate solutions to evolve agriculture practices, and they have recently been trialing LI-COR chambers to monitor Nitrous Oxide emissions.

The results are still in process, but the data collected from this project in combination with all data layers from Olds College could help predict the impact of practiced changes on the carbon footprint of crop production. Read the full report: https://bit.ly/4wuJD1W

Validation Hubs offer Agtech Innovators the unique opportunity to test and validate their agtech across multiple Canadian geographies, like at Innovation Farms Ontario (IFO). IFO is a network of Ontario farms providing research and farm testing on new agtech.

“AIVA has been a huge part of expanding what we can do. They've connected us with cutting-edge ag-tech companies, kept our projects on track, and provided the hands-on technical support that makes many of our research and on-farm trials possible.” – Kaya Moore, IFO Innovation Farms Manager

In 2024 and 2025, IFO ran trials on Picketa Systems Leaf Evaluated Nutrient System (LENS). Traditional crop testing requires a lab, but LENS delivers real-time nutrient analysis in the field to enable timely data-driven decisions. For the 2026 growing season, AIVA is excited to collaborate with IFO to further assess this technology. Read the full report: https://bit.ly/4wuJD1W

“AIVA’s ability to collaborate and gather data across the country will expand our understanding of the cutting-edge technologies we are testing and validating on EMILI’s Innovation Farms, as well as introduce us to technology being tested on other sites.” – Leanne Koroscil, EMILI Farm Manager

Joining the AIVA Network allows Validation Hubs to expand their testing capacity to further accelerate agtech validation and adoption. AIVA is thrilled to collaborate with EMILI over the 2026 growing season to continue the exploration of spray drone efficacy.

In Canada, currently no pesticides have been approved for drone application. EMILI’s Innovation Farms is testing and validating Corteva Agriscience spray drones to collect data that could be used to support future registration of fungicides and herbicides for spray drone application. AIVA is built on a network of Validation Hubs that have been testing and validating agtech for years. This week we are spotlighting some of the rigorous work already underway trialing early-stage agtech at each Validation Hub, starting with Area X.0.

“The Innovation Farm at Area X.O is proud to be part of the AIVA Network—connecting our farming community with new technologies and giving innovators a real-world place to test, learn, and adapt. AIVA’s framework brings rigor to our on-farm programming ensuring that we generate measurable insights and trustworthy outcomes.” – Susanne Cork, Business Development Director, Smart Farm and Advanced Robotics, Area X.O

Area X.O is a secure, technology-enabled demonstration facility testing and validating agtech in real-world conditions. One of their projects includes trialing the ORIO robot in pumpkin fields to evaluate if a larger autonomous platform can w**d at commercial scale. Read the full report: https://bit.ly/4wuJD1W
