CoHabit CoHabit will be an integrated, accessible, and affordable apartment complex where up to 50% of suites include disability support.

CoHabit is a community which alleviates loneliness and isolation, ensuring everyone feels a sense of belonging. About the CoHabit Housing Initiative:

Mission: Create a community where people with physical disabilities will manage their own decision-making and be supported to participate meaningfully in their daily lives. Vision: To achieve an inclusive and integrative culture which creates individual opportunities for maximum independence and capacity-building inside and outside of the home. Values: What we believe and what we stand for, guides us to carry out our goals.

CoHabit is pleased to welcome Shemar Barnes as our new Executive Director.

Shemar is an executive and community leader whose career has spanned government, healthcare, nonprofit organizations and community development. He brings extensive experience in organizational leadership, stakeholder engagement, governance and building partnerships across sectors.

Most recently, Shemar served as Chief of Staff to a Manitoba Cabinet Minister, leading the Minister’s Office and working closely with public servants, community leaders and organizations across Manitoba. His experience in housing and community development also includes previous service on the Board of Directors of the Winnipeg Housing Rehabilitation Corporation.

Deeply engaged in Winnipeg’s community sector, Shemar currently serves as President of the Jamaican Association of Manitoba and brings a community-centred approach to leadership focused on bringing people together, removing barriers and creating the conditions for communities to thrive.

As Executive Director, Shemar will work alongside our Board, staff, partners and community as CoHabit continues advancing its vision for inclusive, accessible housing and communities where people with and without disabilities can live and thrive together.

Please join us in giving Shemar a warm welcome to CoHabit!

CoHabit is announcing that Executive Director Jennifer Rodrigue has resigned, effective August 26, 2026, to pursue a new opportunity. Under Jenn’s leadership, CoHabit achieved incorporation and charitable status and laid the foundation for the service delivery model and partnerships that drive our mission forward.

We’re deeply grateful for Jenn’s contributions and wish her well. Founder Margy Nelson remains closely involved and continues to guide CoHabit’s vision, providing steady continuity through this transition. The Board is committed to a smooth handover and will share updates on the search for our next Executive Director soon. CoHabit’s mission, inclusive living and services for people with disabilities, continues without interruption.
