This year marks 60 years since the City of Windsor annexed the former towns of Ojibway and Riverside. This tour will dive into the early 20th century as U.S. Steel planned to build a steel town in what became the town of Ojibway. This history walking tour will go into why they chose this area for the steel town, why it failed, the players involved (real estate agents, politicians, land owners), and transition from ghost town to the emergence of a metropolitan park.

Tickets are $10 per person and the tour takes place on May 30th from 11 to 1pm at Black Oak Heritage Park. Pre-registration is required and call 519-253-1812 to sign up for tickets.

The photo is a black and white photograph looking south along the proposed D Street, from 20th Street in the proposed town of Ojibway. On the bottom right corner is a stamp from the Canadian Steel Corporation. This site was under consideration at the time for the town site. Photo was taken October 23, 1916.

ARA Associate, William (Bill) Fox, has received the Order of Canada from Governor General Mary Simon for his lifetime of work in Ontario archaeology!

Bill’s long career in public service and education means he has an encyclopaedic knowledge of this province’s history. He served as a leader for the Ontario Archaeological Society and even in retirement he continues to share his wisdom with fellow archaeologists.

Bill is top of our list to contact when we’re trying to figure out a projectile point or unknown chert type. His work to promote Indigenous voices in provincial spaces started early and continues to this day. It’s a joy to see someone who has dedicated his life to archaeology be formally recognized for his work. Congrats, Bill!
