This year marks 60 years since the City of Windsor annexed the former towns of Ojibway and Riverside. This tour will dive into the early 20th century as U.S. Steel planned to build a steel town in what became the town of Ojibway. This history walking tour will go into why they chose this area for the steel town, why it failed, the players involved (real estate agents, politicians, land owners), and transition from ghost town to the emergence of a metropolitan park.
Tickets are $10 per person and the tour takes place on May 30th from 11 to 1pm at Black Oak Heritage Park. Pre-registration is required and call 519-253-1812 to sign up for tickets.
The photo is a black and white photograph looking south along the proposed D Street, from 20th Street in the proposed town of Ojibway. On the bottom right corner is a stamp from the Canadian Steel Corporation. This site was under consideration at the time for the town site. Photo was taken October 23, 1916.
