The importance of understanding the synergies of Indigenous and western science

At POLAR, we believe strong Arctic research is built on cooperation and mutual learning that values both Western science and Indigenous knowledge systems, which allow us to meaningfully and respectfully co-produce knowledge that benefits everyone.

Dr. Matilde Tomaselli, POLAR wildlife researcher, works collaboratively with Indigenous knowledge holders in Northern communities to study wildlife health and support the people who rely on them.

Matilde applies the principle of "Two-Eyed Seeing" - the ability learn from the strengths of both Indigenous and Western knowledge. Also called “Etuaptmumk,” Two-Eyed Seeing was developed by Mi'kmaq Elder Albert Marshall.
