Join the Yukon Science Institute & Yukon U tomorrow evening

The next Research in Progress talk is happening this Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Beringia Centre, or virtually via Zoom.

Sunday's topic "Digging into the Yukon's earthquake hazards" will focus on the broader story around sensing data for seismic regions.

The Yukon is a seismically active region. Some earthquakes, like the December 6th, 2025, magnitude 7.0 event, are widely felt. But these contemporary earthquakes do not tell the whole story.

New remote sensing data have drawn attention to major geological fault lines that show evidence of having ruptured in large earthquakes in recent geologic time.

By digging into these faults, we can piece together a longer history of earthquakes than is available from modern records.

Come learn about "paleoseismic" records, seismic hazard assessments, and how we can inform building codes and other standards to protect humans and the environment.

The talk will feature research from Theron Finley, PhD, surficial geologist at the Yukon Geological Survey.

This event is co-hosted by YukonU and Yukon Science Institute.

Talks are open and free to the public, students, staff and faculty.

The importance of understanding the synergies of Indigenous and western science

At POLAR, we believe strong Arctic research is built on cooperation and mutual learning that values both Western science and Indigenous knowledge systems, which allow us to meaningfully and respectfully co-produce knowledge that benefits everyone.

Dr. Matilde Tomaselli, POLAR wildlife researcher, works collaboratively with Indigenous knowledge holders in Northern communities to study wildlife health and support the people who rely on them.

Matilde applies the principle of "Two-Eyed Seeing" - the ability learn from the strengths of both Indigenous and Western knowledge. Also called “Etuaptmumk,” Two-Eyed Seeing was developed by Mi'kmaq Elder Albert Marshall.

The interconnectedness of ecosystems, animals and human health is part of POLAR’s “One Health” research pillar. Learn more: https://ow.ly/A09250ZhJHN
