As the weather shifts it's clear that smoke from the NWT can makes it's way to Whitehorse! Crown fires drive smoke high into the air and it moves 1000s of kilometers.

Rising C02 isn't just making it warmer, it's making the spruce and pine trees in Whitehorse grow denser foliage. This removes any spare nitrogen from the forest floor and makes it drier and darker.

There is increasingly less resistance to fire hazard reduction work in the Whitehorse area but it still remains. Most people object to fire hazard reduction work due their love of nature. There is a rapidly growing peer reviewed data set that shows that opening up pure conifer stands significantly increases biodiversity. An easy anecdote is moose don’t eat spruce, they eat willow. And Willow needs a a little light.

Next time you are out and about listen for birds in fire reduction treated areas and in dense conifer.

A lot of people think that homes are lost due to direct forest fire interaction. The truth is that most homes are lost from sparks carried in from crown fires that are in the distance. That's why it's critical to make sure that there isn't things in your yard that can catch on fire that will ignite your house. Dirty gutters full of dry leaves are an easy place to start. Moving woodpiles away from the house and removing conifer trees are also easy ways to harden your home.
