Last week at YukonU!

On October 7, we co-hosted a Lunch & Learn with the YukonU Food Research Group to chat all things food security!

We loved connecting and sharing the important work happening in communities across the territory. The YukonU team also announced a new student survey to learn more about food insecurity and student experiences across all YukonU campuses.

Food plays such an important role in helping young learners feel nourished, supported, and ready to learn. We’re looking forward to seeing the survey report and continuing conversations about food in learning spaces.

We’re thrilled to welcome Michelle Watson back to the YFSN team!

After a year of traveling with family, Michelle is returning as the YFSN Coordinator and eager to reconnect with her community in the Yukon.

“During my time away, I was able to experience how people live and eat in various places around the world. From watching our eco village community in Fukushima Japan provide mutual support in ensuring everyone’s rice fields were planted, to sharing a single communal dish with our host family in Morocco around a table of eleven individuals; food was a highlight of our travels and a constant thread pulling together the fabric of the communities we were invited to be a part of.”

YFSN is also incredibly grateful to Sage Brown, who has done a fantastic job as Coordinator over the past year.

We’re lucky to have such a great team!

Last weekend, we celebrated the Mayo Food System Indicators Project with the community that shaped it.

After an incredible morning at the last Stewart Valley Community Farmers Market of the year, we gathered at NND Garden to share this project’s final report. A big thank you to Félix Plouffe for showing us around the garden, and to Kayla Hunt for putting together some seriously delicious bites featuring ingredients grown right there.

To our Ihdzí’ project team - Catherine, Nikki, and Syd - thank you for being so generous with the time, care, and insights that were poured into this project. We’re so grateful for all the work you’ve done bringing the community together around food and bringing this report to life.

And to the community of Mayo - thank you for trusting us with your stories. We’re incredibly grateful for the relationships we’ve built over the course of this project and for the chance to spend time in Mayo through every season this past year. It felt pretty special to celebrate all that work together in the fall sunshine, around the fire, and with plenty of good food!

The report will be available on the YFSN website within the coming weeks. We can’t wait to share it with all of you!

Nothing but fun this past Saturday at the Yukon Farm Fair!

Our team had the best time building a scarecrow, sharing some broccoli leaf chips from Beaver Creek, and chatting with friends new and old 💚

Thank you Yukon Agricultural Association for bringing us all together to enjoy the sunshine and celebrate Yukon agriculture

It’s a berry exciting time!

Harvest season is here and whether you’re heading out on the land or into the garden, there’s nothing quite like watching the season’s berries ripen and make their way from bush to basket 🧺

We extend our gratitude to the stewards of these lands for the knowledge, teachings, and traditions that have been passed down and preserved, allowing us to continue enjoying these sweet little odes to abundance 🫐

On this day last year, we gathered on the land to listen to, learn from, and connect with local, regional, and national food champions. Those three special days were full of big conversations, delicious food, and the very best company 💚

What’s growing in the Yukon? 🌱

Last week, our team joined the Agriculture Branch for their annual Demonstration Day.

Located at the Gunnar Nilsson and Mickey Lammers Research Forest, the Research and Demonstration Farm has been exploring the possibilities of northern agriculture since 1988.

Today, you’ll find Yukon seed potatoes, corn, lowbush blueberries, brome grass, and more - trials that are helping us understand what’s possible for Yukon grown food systems 🌾
