This week, Yukon kids are back in school! šŸ

As a new school year gets underway, we’re taking a closer look at the state of school food in the territory - how we got here, what’s new, and what we still need to ensure every child has access to nutritious meals at school

A lot has changed over the past school year, and we’re hopeful for even more positive change ahead šŸ’›

It’s a berry exciting time!

Harvest season is here and whether you’re heading out on the land or into the garden, there’s nothing quite like watching the season’s berries ripen and make their way from bush to basket 🧺

We extend our gratitude to the stewards of these lands for the knowledge, teachings, and traditions that have been passed down and preserved, allowing us to continue enjoying these sweet little odes to abundance 🫐

Here are a few of our favourite summer berries and where you might be lucky enough find them !

What’s your berry of choice this time of year?

ONE YEAR since the Yukon Food Security Conference !!

On this day last year, we gathered on the land to listen to, learn from, and connect with local, regional, and national food champions. Those three special days were full of big conversations, delicious food, and the very best company šŸ’š

Missed the action? Check out the conference portal on our website to see the full event video, read the report, and watch all of our panels: https://www.yukonfoodsecurity.ca/conference

A huge thank you to TH Farm, Ihdzi’, YukonU Mayo Campus, and NND Garden for graciously hosting us and sharing your stories, knowledge, and spaces. We remain so grateful 🫶

Bringing people together in community to talk about food is our favorite thing to do, and we’re looking forward to doing it again soon... stay tuned!

What’s growing in the Yukon? 🌱

Last week, our team joined the Agriculture Branch for their annual Demonstration Day.

Located at the Gunnar Nilsson and Mickey Lammers Research Forest, the Research and Demonstration Farm has been exploring the possibilities of northern agriculture since 1988.

Today, you’ll find Yukon seed potatoes, corn, lowbush blueberries, brome grass, and more - trials that are helping us understand what’s possible for Yukon grown food systems 🌾

A big thank you to Randy, Erin, and Mikayla for welcoming us, providing tasty local treats, and sharing your knowledge!

Happy Food Day Canada!

On this day inspiring folks to shop, dine, & cook Canadian, we’re celebrating our incredible friends and vendors at the Fireweed Market in Whitehorse!

More than just making our summers vibrant, the market brings together regional farmers, fishers, bakers, chefs, growers, and everyday food lovers - the people who sustain us!

A BIG thank you to everyone who grows, harvests, creates, and serves the food that brings us together šŸ’š

June moments in Mayo 🌱

Last week, we visited the NND Garden as part of our work on the Mayo Food Systems Indicator Project.

Amid ripening saskatoon berries, vibrant greenhouses, and hard-working hands, it’s always exciting to see community gardens come to life in the summer time.

Stay tuned to learn more about the NND Garden and other pillars of Mayo’s food story in our project report coming September 2026!
