⚒️ TRAIL CREW UPDATE ⚒️

Shocking!
Last Saturday, I was awoken by thunder and stayed up, distracted by the wild lightning show. Seeing strikes all over Sproatt (Squirrels/Marmot zone) and near Loggers lake had me tossing and turning, wondering what the morning would bring. The heavy rain helped avoid any nearby wildfire starts so set off on our Sunday commute up the Flank in the tail end of the storm. The downpour left the flank looking like a creekbed. Water blasted away a lot of the fine soil material. Leaving behind loose soft ball sized rocks and woody debris piles that made for a spicy navigating. Up on the Squirrels, the lower grade tread took it all in. It went from pure dust a week ago to mud in a flash. This helped showcase sections of trail that “worked” and parts that needed more attention. Rather than jump straight into the mud, we focused on bridges and moving the blue re-route along. I honed in on a problem of my own design: the best shaped swoop (that I had flagged) went through a monster sized rock. Armed with a long metal rod, gravity and the stonework teachings of Ken Melamed, I ambitioned for more than simply removing the rock… It would become the trail. After preparing its final destination, I summoned my inner Obelix to precisely nudge the menhir into place! For the engineers reading this, I mostly used class 2 levering to nudge the fall and class 1 levering to get the final tilt just right. We’ll be dealing with mud and compacting tread in the coming weeks while juggling volunteer digging events which start-up again in September. SHOCKING: IT’S SEPTEMBER ALREADY!

Wildfire Thinning Project News
The Alta lake road project is in its final cleanup on the River Runs Through it side and crews will be moving into the Get Over it/ Rebobs side soon. On the other side of the valley, starting in September, the RMOW and Whistler-Blackcomb will conduct more thinning work around the Kadenwood neighborhood (near the gondola). This will affect some trails in and around the bike park. Please obey all signage in the area as the tree falling crews work.

See you on the trails!

⚒️ TRAIL CREW UPDATE ⚒️

Refreshing Shift
I took the week off for my annual “corn run” to the Fraser Valley. Of course, it was an opportunity to ride a variety of zones as well. Lake dips and breweries sure helped after battling every type of stinger! It seems that everything is thorny when you get closer to sea level… The Blackberry vines destroyed my fancy wool jerseys and my shins are still numb from the stinging nettle. FVMBA trail crews have a tall task to tackle brushcutting such a jungle! The trails were less “slabby” than what we’re used to here, but they made up for that with berms, jumps and solitude. The current motorized recreation ban made it unusually silent in these popular motorsport zones. You’re probably wondering what were the highlight trails and beers from my trip? Total Sanity, Old Baldy, Dark Matter, Dolcita Eclipse Rakau, Front Porch, Harder Way, Root Cellar, Electric Lettuce and Fresh Kicks #2 were all great… You’ll just need to figure out what’s what!

Back in Whistler, on Lord Of The Squirrels, the WORCA crew also got a refreshing shift: from hard benching and rock stacking to bridge building. Tall Michal found an awesome log to split for decking so everyone got a break from clanking mattocks into rocks (for now). Mushrooms are fruiting so there must be (some) moisture in the ground, however, like our colleagues in the bike park, we’re praying for rain for any of our recent work to hold up.

⚒️ TRAIL CREW UPDATE ⚒️

Doolittle Moments

Our work on the Lord of the Squirrels bypass hit me hard with nostalgia this week. It wasn’t the smoke or Huckleberries, it was the “place”. After armouring up last week’s bottomless bog, we reached a welcome ridge from which we caught a glimpse of the shrinking Armchair glacier. Looking towards Sproatt’s summit revealed a wall of trees that towered way above the young forest we’d just emerged from. Our “office” was about to get an upgrade! As we worked into the undisturbed forest, the tall trees offered a calming sense of awe. This “chamber” in the forest is blessed with a surreal soundtrack of bird calls and creaking trees. A family of deer casually strolled through our worksite to get first tracks on the fresh trail. Monster sized tree roots made us change our building style to stacking the trail bed “up and over” the roots rather than benching through them. While flagging the line, I witnessed the commotion of squirrels playing (or flirting…). Wild twists and turns around one tree, leaping to the next and on and on while yipping loudly. The dance was frantic and they spun in my direction! I expected (hoped) they’d run up my leg or bounce off my pack like I was just another parkour feature, but the “chaser” spotted me. He let his partner race off and zoomed in on me! I was treated to the same “What are YOU doing here!?!” show that the trail’s namesake gave me in 2014! He showed a mix of curiosity and assertion that I was in HIS midden! The encounter made me wonder: Could this be the same Alpha Squirrel? Alas, the internet tells me that Red Squirrels in the wild only make it to their 6th birthday. Therefore, I deduced this bold critter must be the Grandchild of the Lord of the Squirrels! What a special (re)encounter!

Trail days will start up again on September 13 so we let the wet weather nudge us back to the Marmot Mayhem to prepare more volunteer projects. On our slate: Flag some trail to bench, pull large stumps and build a rock wall to get around some bedrock. We also cut out the corridor to a quaint ledge in the insufferable steep face. This oasis, which will soon host a sweet left-hand turn, was a perfect lunch spot. “I can see my house from here!”. Between bites of my sandwich, I heard the chatter of a large flock. “Pshhhh Pshhhh Pshhhh!” I called. Within seconds we were swarmed by a dozen curious Chestnut Backed Chickadees! The smart little birds hopped from branch to branch, taking turns at sizing me up: “Chicka-dee-dee!” …I only warranted two “dees” which labeled me: mostly harmless.

See you on the trails!
