Have you had a negative interaction with police in BC? Check out our new Pathways to Police Accountability toolkit for what you can do after the police have violated your rights.
The toolkit has practical and realistic information about what police accountability pathways are available to you, how to use them, and what to expect along the way. It explains legal terms, simplifies complex processes, and provides realistic expectations about how effective— or ineffective — each pathway might be.

Accessing justice shouldn’t be complicated. Government agencies mandated to hold police accountable are failing to provide the necessary information and support to help people navigate the system and meaningfully access justice. By launching this toolkit, we are taking action to build public capacity and confidence to seek remedies for police harm or misconduct. We hope that an increase in the volume of complaints, a greater awareness of systemic misconduct, and building pressure for police reform will ultimately enable stronger independent police oversight.

In holding true to values of transparency and accountability, BCFNJC’s Women’s Team is proud to share a Final Narrative Report that recounts the implementation and transparency planning phase of the Indigenous Women’s Justice Plan.

“Our journey throughout this phase was a path of learning, growth, and deep gratitude … this work was rooted in something far greater than meeting requirements; it was about honoring and centering the voices of our Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people.”

We lift our hands up in gratitude to the Firelight team and to Women and Gender Equality Canada for supporting this work.

Today, we honour Red Dress Day and remember the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people.

Their absence is felt in families, communities, and across the land. Their voices, stories, and spirits are not forgotten.

We stand in solidarity with all those who march, grieve, and continue to call for justice.

BCFNJC welcomes the ‘Our Time to Act’ report to the Chief Coroner of British Columbia, released last week.

The review of intimate partner violence-related deaths in BC (2016-2024) found these deaths were “overwhelmingly preventable,” and calls on the province to act. The report found that while Indigenous people represent 5.9% of BC’s population, they accounted for 24% of IPV victims. This is not acceptable.

BCFNJC supports the recommendations to address IPV deaths and believes that full implementation of BCFNJC's Indigenous Women's Justice Plan is needed to further protect Indigenous women and girls in BC. We are grateful that BCFNJC was included on the review panel, where we were represented by our Managing Policy Lawyer, Christina J. Cook, KC.
