It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our valued volunteers, Bert, this past weekend. The Wawa Ice Fishing Derby extends our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

Some of you may of known Bert as one of our patrollers at the derby, having met him on the ice where he spent his time ensuring the derby was safe and enjoyable for all.

Bert had both volunteered countless hours and participated in the derby for many years, and we are so grateful for his dedication and commitment.

His presence, service and spirit will be truly missed by all.

There’s nothing quite like an early winter morning on the lake…especially during the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby.

It’s 8 AM. A hot coffee in hand. The hut slowly warming up. The hum of snowmobiles in the background. Watching other anglers head out with lines and gear in tow. The air is crisp, the world is calm. Feeling the bite of a fish underneath the surface and wondering “is this the winner?”

Who’s already counting down the days until next year?

At the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby, we celebrate our love of fishing, but that love comes with responsibility. Every piece of trash left behind harms our lakes, wildlife, and community.

We’re asking every angler to take out what you bring in. Together, we can ensure Wawa’s lakes stay pristine, safe, and full of life..for today and for generations to come.
