“So, I'm from P.E.I, so it was always a dream of mine to come to Ontario because I think there's more career opportunities for me. I eventually on Laurier because it's a good combination of small town vibes and it wasn't a super big culture shock for me but it was still near cities. I was exposed to so many more people that I would have never met in P.E.I, P.E.I is definitely not culturally diverse, so I think it was really cool to meet people that I'd never meet otherwise. I'm a part of AIESEC Laurier, and we drive international exchange. So that's a really cool thing to be involved in because it's entirely student-run organization. It's very empowering, encourages you to be a leader, and you meet a lot of cool people through that.”

"I was between Laurier, Western, and University of Ontario. I went to University of Ontario first, and it was very empty and open. I came to Laurier next, and right then I was like I don't even have to go to Western. I just fell in love with the campus and the people, and the community. It felt like the perfect mix of school but also a family, like a home away from home, based on the supports they had, and everything they offer. Western was huge and to me, in a way, an 'everybody for themselves' type of place but at Laurier we're all just here to help each other and I fell in love with that. Being here, I learned about true friendship, if that's not too cliché. But yeah, the friends you meet here are so different from high school and you get to know the real you as you grow up. You age so much in your first year away in terms of your independence and having those people around you as a support system really brings you so much closer. It definitely solidifies the family away from your family at home."

“So Laurier’s known by UW students as the high school around the corner, but however I feel like there are many advantages that play into being a smaller school, and that’s why I chose Laurier subconsciously. Even in terms of class sizes, and professor availability a school like Laurier works better for those kinds of things/issues. It’s not a college, but the smaller sizes help, for sure. When I was choosing a school, my choices were Laurier, UW, and UTM, but believe it or not, at 11:59, on the dot for the deadline, my brother was like “you gotta pick one”, and at the last second I picked Laurier, and you know what, I was happy with it you know? If I chose UW or UTM, I don’t know if I would have been as satisfied with what I picked. When I came here, and with all the experiences I’ve had here, I definitely made the right choice. In terms of experiences, I’ve been involved in house council, LOCUS, and groups like The Association of Black Students, and the people I’ve come to meet and the experiences I’ve gotten because of these options, has in a sense, thickened my resume, like you never know, I could have had those in other places, but I’m glad that the people I’ve met here, like I’m glad for those kinds of people. For example, I was a part of Radio Laurier’s show called The Basement, with the ABS group, and I had an amazing team, we talked about anything from St. Paddy’s day to Valentine's day, to the struggles of an everyday black or colored person throughout the school. They educated me a lot, there’s a lot of things that we discussed, that if I wasn’t a part of it, if I wasn’t involved, I would not have known, and it really opened my eyes to a lot of troubles that you think you’d know about them, but then you hear about them, and go wow, I didn’t understand it in this kind of perspective. What’s great too, is that this year I’m going to be a don. I’m excited about that because honestly, I want to be able to influence my students and encourage them. School’s hard, sometimes I really feel like giving up too. I feel like we all feel that way, but it's like I feel like I can also give my first years what they need to hopefully finish their degree, or find out whatever they need to do."

It’s crunch time📚🤯 if you’re feeling overwhelmed, here’s some advice from Jessica, a 4th year here at Laurier: “Learn how to study and find a study method that works. In first year I would write my notes out and read them over but now I read them, summarize them and make mind-maps, so just learn how to study based on what works best for you. And have fun, obviously, but also priortize your time properly.”

"I don't think Laurier is what I was expecting. I thought maybe it was going to be a continuation of high school and then when I got here I found it was better. I don't know how to describe it, but you're studying what you want to study and it's specific and you can choose classes that interest you instead of 'I gotta take this' so it's better...a lot of people just go 'whatever, I don't need to try, I'm just aiming for this grade.' Why not aim for as good as you can get, you know what I mean? Like aim for higher, even if you don't necessarily get that grade...what's that saying? Shoot for the moon, land in the stars or something..."

“When I first came to this school, I just had that feeling as soon as I walked onto campus, like ‘this is basically where I want to go.’ And I loved the school spirit and the welcoming feeling I got when I got here - it was beat every other school I went to. As soon as I did the tour I was like ‘I'm coming here.’ Laurier's very diverse and very accepting of a lot of people. I learned how to work with a new environment and new people and how to adapt to everything because it's very different from high school. So just be able to adapt to things quicker and stay on top of things. And get involved!”

“So I have a long family history of being in the army. Starting with my great uncle who served in ww2, specifically in the navy. An interesting story about him from his military days; He was on a ship when his ship was hit by a submarine, the ship was sinking, and there weren’t enough lifeboats for everyone on that boat. He was one of the ranking officers at the time and he told the rest of his troops to take the remaining lifeboats. He then proceeded to jump off the boat, and swam for a day until another ship picked him up. No surprise, he was one of my main inspirations for joining the army. The other being my uncle. He was a military police officer in the reserves for 4 years. He told me that the best way to know who you are as a person, was to join the military. So I applied for the army reserves last year, and then I was sworn in June 18 2018, I’ll always remember that date. If anyone’s interested in joining the army, regular forces or reserves, do it. You can do it alongside school, and you will gain so many friendships, leadership chances, camaraderie, endless crazy stories, and opportunities for just about anything you’ll need after you leave the military. The military is honestly one of the best experiences of my life. I cannot recommend it enough.”
