Tailored and Practical – The Seafood Business Accelerator tailors our mentorship team to meet the real needs of each SBA Trainee. Last week’s webinar was a perfect example of this!

We were thrilled to welcome Jon Crofts from Codfathers Seafood Market to the SBA Mentor Team. Jon’s experience in seafood retail, value-chain distribution, Slow Fish and marketing sparked a lively, practical discussion with our trainees. His insight filled an important gap for entrepreneurs exploring how to move their products from harvest to market.

This is what makes the SBA unique: we build our mentorship network around the specific challenges our trainees are facing, bringing in the right experts at the right time.

Proud of this cohort and grateful to Jon and all our amazing mentors for sharing their knowledge.

We are wrapping up another week of learning with the Seafood Business Accelerator! This week, SBA trainees explored Business Basics through both Western and Indigenous lenses with guidance from Brady Calancie and Trevor Cootes – thank you both for sharing your knowledge and your continued mentorship.

Indigenous enterprise isn’t new – it's built on thousands of years of trade, relationship building, stewardship and knowledge sharing. While systemic barriers remain, strong networks and the right advisors can make a powerful difference.

We are grateful for another week of shared learning in the SBA – we learn as much from our trainees as they do from us!

This week, our cohort of Indigenous seafood entrepreneurs dove into Food Safety Regulations and Product Development — two key areas for turning great ideas into safe, market-ready products. Thank you Lara Tiro and Sean Xia for your brilliant presentations and expert advice.

From understanding local and federal food rules to refining product designs, participants are learning how to launch with confidence while protecting community values, food safety, and sustainability.

We’re so inspired by the dedication and creativity of this group as they build the future of Indigenous seafood businesses across BC.

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

Today we honour the strength, resilience, and knowledge of Indigenous peoples. We pause to remember the hardships of the past and the ongoing impacts that continue to shape communities today.

In recent weeks, our time with local fishers, harvesters, and processors has been filled with stories of traditional practices, reflections on those traditions disrupted and lost by colonialism, and conversations about creating new pathways for the next generation.

On this day, we renew our commitment to support these seafood leaders in taking action to build economic resilience, strengthen their communities, and create a brighter future.
