OUR BUILT HERITAGE AND THE STORIES OF THE PEOPLE BEHIND THEM This intrigued me and I started investigating what had happened.

I have always been interested in architecture, archaeology and history and the associated stories of the people who lived and worked in the buildings and on the land. My interest in the history of Whitehorse began many years ago and was stimulated further when on one of my visits to the Acorn Nursery on Canterbury Rd in Surrey Hills I noticed the small old white house on the opposite side of the s

treet had vanished. I found a wonderful story about Surrey Hills, its history, the people who settled, owned and lived there but specifically about the demolished house which I discovered was called ‘Spenceycroft’. In my investigations I came across comments such as 'I didn't know that about Whitehorse' or 'Whitehorse does not have history or heritage'. These comments inspired my research and the information I found is a testament to the rich and diverse heritage of Whitehorse. I have learnt much more about the rich and diverse history of Whitehorse and the people who contributed to our local heritage and culture - the journey is still continuing. I hope that you will join me in my journey of discovery. I will periodically add homes and different interesting items I have come across in regard to the heritage of Whitehorse to this page.

Step back in time to c1910!

This incredible historic photo shows Mitcham looking northeast from around Station St, toward the intersection of Whitehorse Rd and Mitcham Rd. Mitcham - looks a little different today!

A rare glimpse of Box Hill’s early commercial centre: a c1904 photograph capturing the view looking north along Station St toward the Whitehorse Rd intersection, featuring the South Africa and China War Memorial in the background.

This c1905 photograph captures the intersection of Elgar and Whitehorse Rd's in Box Hill, looking north up Elgar Road.

In the foreground, you can see Lloyds Butchers on the left and the original Whitehorse Hotel on the right, which famously featured a painted white wooden horse above its door. Far in the distance toward the top right, past Tram Road, stands the old Doncaster lookout tower—a landmark built to draw land buyers that is now the site of Westfield Doncaster.

This 1913 photo was taken in front of what is now 766 Whitehorse Rd, Mont Albert looking southeast. The scene shows the area as semi-rural with a passenger steam train at full speed heading towards Melbourne.

The house in the foreground became the well-known ‘Glencoe’ restaurant around the early 1990s before being demolished between 2005 to 2015 for an apartment complex to be built on the site.

House relocation

The house once stood on the south side of Whitehorse Rd, between Linsley St and St Peter’s Anglican Church, Box Hill. It was moved in the 1920s, but its new location remains unknown - though local children loved the show!
