One year ago I pressed record for the first time with no idea who - if anyone - would listen.

Today, Paws on Point has been heard in 32 countries, is sitting in the top 20% of podcasts globally, and has charted in Canada, the US, France, and Macau.

To celebrate, I did something a little different in this episode. I said thank you to every single one of those 32 countries - in their own language. 🌍

Was my pronunciation perfect? Absolutely not. 😂 Did I mean every word? 100%.

This podcast exists because of you. The handlers, the advocates, the curious, the supporters - in Canada and in countries I never expected to reach. You showed up. You stayed. And you keep coming back.

Year two is already looking special. New guests. Bigger conversations. And a community that just keeps growing.

Behind every service dog is a person who fought to get there.

The medical appointments. The documentation. The assessments. The training. The cost. The waiting. The uncertainty.

And then - finally - a partnership that changes everything.

We don't talk enough about what it actually takes to get a service dog. The process is rigorous, it's expensive, and it can be emotionally exhausting. But for the handlers who make it through, the other side is a level of independence and safety that many of us take for granted every single day.

At Pawsabilities, we're here for every step of that journey. The hard parts and the extraordinary ones.

New research says otherwise.

In our latest episode of Paws on Point, Tim sits down with Dr Satish Raj — cardiologist and POTS researcher at the University of Calgary — and Kate Bourne, MD/PhD candidate and POTS patient herself — to discuss the most comprehensive long-term POTS study ever conducted.

The findings? 98% of patients still had POTS symptoms 23 years later. Only 2% fully recovered.

Let's clear something up.

A service dog is not a therapy dog. It is not an emotional support animal. It is not a pet that makes its owner feel better.

A service dog is a highly trained working animal that performs specific tasks to mitigate a disability - tasks that the handler cannot perform for themselves. That distinction matters enormously, both legally and practically.

Therapy dogs visit hospitals and care homes to bring comfort to others. Emotional support animals provide companionship to their owner. Both are wonderful. Neither has the same public access rights as a certified service dog.

Understanding the difference isn't just semantics. It's the foundation of a system that protects the people who need it most.

Service dog handlers shouldn't have to justify their right to exist in public spaces.
But many do. Every day!

Being questioned, turned away, or made to feel like an inconvenience isn't just uncomfortable - it's a human rights issue. In British Columbia, a certified service dog handler has the legal right to access any public space, any business, any form of transit. Full stop.

Pawsabilities Service Dog Society exists in part to make sure that right is understood by the public, by businesses, and by the handlers themselves who sometimes don't know they can push back.

📖 Knowledge is power. And nobody should have to fight for their dignity.
