What we carry is not always visible.

It can be a memory, a question, a responsibility, a belief, a practice, a story, or a hope for something better.

At TEDx Kalamalka Lake, this year’s theme, What We Carry, invites us to consider the ideas and experiences that shape us, and the ones we may choose to carry forward with more intention.

On November 3, 2026, 9 speakers will take the stage in Vernon for an evening of reflection, curiosity, and community conversation.

Join us at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre.

Meet Zeena Zaiyouna, one of the speakers joining us at TEDx Kalamalka Lake 2026.

Zeena is a conductor, oboist, educator, and transdisciplinary artist whose work explores how sound and movement can create embodied experiences that expand our understanding of wellbeing and the human condition.

Through performance, educational research, and creative practice, Zeena examines how communication, integration, and release happen. Her work spans professional, youth, and intergenerational chamber ensembles, as well as learning and play environments designed to shift how we understand ourselves and connect with others.

Zeena holds a double Master of Lifelong Learning from Aarhus University and the University of Deusto, where she studied transnational educational policy and pedagogy. Her experience has taken her from designing play-based workshops across four continents with Right To Play International, to exploring mental health through music at Toronto Metropolitan University, to serving three seasons as Music Director and Conductor of the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra.

At the heart of her practice is a powerful question: How might we move beyond fragmented ways of understanding ourselves and communicating in the world?

Meet Amy Shelling, an author exploring how the environments we create can shape the lives we live.

Amy’s work examines one of the few environments we have the power to intentionally shape: our homes. Through psychology, observation, and everyday life, she explores why our homes matter, not simply as places we live, but as spaces that influence how we think, feel, connect, and function.

Rather than focusing on the idea of a perfect home, Amy invites us to consider the lifelong practice of shaping our environments with intention. Her work looks at how our homes can reduce unnecessary friction, strengthen connection, and continue supporting the lives we are actually living.

A writer for more than two decades, Amy’s work has earned national recognition, including a fellowship from Varuna, Australia’s National Writers’ House, and funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.

We are shaped by more than the big moments in our lives.

We are shaped by the rooms we return to, the routines we build, the conversations we carry, and the environments that quietly influence how we think, feel, connect, and function.

This year’s TEDx Kalamalka Lake theme, What We Carry, invites us to look more closely at the visible and invisible forces that shape our lives.

Join us on November 3, 2026 at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre for an evening of ideas, stories, and meaningful conversation.

Inclusion is often shaped by the details.

The food available at a school event. The assumptions we make about what everyone can participate in. The questions we ask when something does not work for everyone.

TEDx Kalamalka Lake brings together 9 speakers who invite us to look more closely at the experiences we carry and the changes that become possible when we are willing to listen.

This year’s event, What We Carry, is an evening for people who believe ideas can help us see differently, connect more deeply, and create more thoughtful communities.

Meet Rachael Reilly, our youngest TEDx Kalamalka Lake 2026 speaker.

At just twelve years old, Rachael has never accepted “because that’s the way it’s always been done” as an answer. Her curiosity has led her to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and look for better ways of doing things.

Diagnosed with celiac disease at three years old, Rachael has spent nearly a decade navigating everyday situations where sharing food is not always simple. From birthday parties to school lunches, she has learned to speak up, not only for herself, but for others too.

Rachael gave her first presentation about celiac disease to her Grade 1 classmates and has continued educating those around her ever since. After noticing that school food and treats often excluded students with celiac disease and other dietary needs, she shared her experience with her school district’s Accessibility Committee to encourage more inclusive choices.

As a competitive gymnast and volleyball player, Rachael brings resilience, determination, and the courage to keep asking questions that others might not think to ask.

Hear Rachael Reilly at TEDx Kalamalka Lake on November 3, 2026 at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre.
