YES!

We need an Art Policy for the City of Vernon and an Independent Cultural Asset Committee so there are proper policies and processes in place and to make sure that all stakeholders are not only protected but represented. Public art is important to this community but it should not be left solely in the hands of politicians, the DVA or Tourism. ALL stakeholders should have a voice and the process should be open and transparent. Taxpayer funds are being used in many of these projects so taxpayers should have access to the process and they should be covered by proper policies to protect all involved. This isn’t about just one mural or one artist this is about ALL public art. Sveva represents all of us.

This is going to be a VERY special show from local artists in homage to our Sveva!

Step into Her World: art inspired by Sveva Caetani – a powerful exhibition inspired by the life and legacy of Sveva Caetani.

Featuring 17 artists, this special exhibition explores portals of identity, memory, resilience, and creative expression through diverse contemporary works, March 19 – April 8, 2026 at the Caetani Centre Gallery.

Opening Gala is Friday, March 20, 5–7 PM. Join us for an evening of art, community, and inspiration as we explore Sveva through the eyes of 17 contemporary women artists including: Jude Clarke, Virginia Dansereau, Melissa Dinwoodie, Shirry Insole, aj jaeger, Wanda Lock, Michelle Loughery, Cheryl Mark, Destanne Norris, Julie Oakes, Laisha Rosnau, Svetlana Shkuratova, Gail Short, Gabrielle Strong, Artist, Heidi Thompson, Gale Woodhouse, and Alessandra Woodward.

Dear friends of Sveva, it is important for you to know this.
Our beloved Sveva has been gaining long-overdue recognition on the world stage in so many beautiful ways. Her works have recently returned from Rome where they were featured at the world reknown MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts. Filmmaker Heidi Thompson has created a remarkable animated film inspired by the Recapitulation series that has already won several international film festival awards. In addition, an Italian filmmaker has produced a documentary about her extraordinary life. The Caetani Cultural Centre has been doing a wonderful job representing and supporting this growing international recognition.
But there has been ZERO formal acknowledgement by the City of Vernon.
NONE. NADA. ZIP.
No representation in Italy. No congratulations. No akcnowledgment what. so. ever.
We find it deeply disappointing, shameful and heart breaking - bordering on disrespectful. We simply do not understand how this can be acceptable, especially when the city owns the Cultural Centre itself. As many of you know, the city is also planning to remove her mural, and our petition requesting a conversation about creating a policy and advisory committee to protect and manage Vernon’s cultural assets has been ignored.
So when the Vernon Council goes to election this fall, PLEASE VOTE and consider this carefully. A council that does not value our community’s history, art, and culture — or recognize the tourism opportunities they create — is not a council that is thinking creatively or acting with vision for Vernon’s future.
There is tremendous opportunity here!!! Around the world, small communities have embraced their artistic heritage and now attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year — places like Arles connected to Vincent van Gogh, Giverny home of Claude Monet, and Santa Fe associated with Georgia O'Keefe.
Vernon could do the same — if leadership chose to embrace it.
If you get a chance, please go witness RECAPITULATION in it's entirety being shown at the Coldstream Community Hall April 3 - 11th, with a black-tie Gala and dinner on April 10th. Join us in honouring this remarkable woman, artist, and her life’s work. Her genius deserves recognition, celebration, gratitude, and pride from the community she called home.
