Kalamalka Fly Fishers Society

Kalamalka Fly Fishers Society We meet Monday's 7-9pm. Wildlife Federation (BCWF) . The founding principles of the Kalamalka Flyfishers Society are Conservation, Education and Participation.

The Kalamalka Flyfishers Society is a non-profit, member funded society and proud member of the British Columbia Federation of Fly Fishers (BCFFF) and the B.C. Conservation – To conserve, protect and restore fish habitats in the North Okanagan and surrounding areas. Our biggest and ongoing project is the enhancement of Kokanee Salmon spawning beds in the Coldstream Creek near Vernon. Education – T

o provide education and/or self-help opportunities for those wishing to learn any or all aspects of fly fishing and to help them develop their skills as fly fishers. Each year we run a “Basic Fly Tying Course” and an “Introduction to Fly Fishing Course” which are open to the public. On occasion, we teach basic fly tying techniques at the local schools, Girl Guides and Scouts. Kids are the future for the continuing successful sports fishing in British Columbia and new members of the Kalamalka Flyfishers Society. Each year, with the help of the Sicamous Fly Club, we host a Learn to Fish day at the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre. For members, we have regular fly tying nights and some more advanced fly tying techniques nights. Fly casting clinics for both single handed and two handed (spey) are very popular amongst the members. Participation – To promote the participation in the sport of fly fishing and other types of sport fishing in the North Okanagan and surrounding areas. Every year since 2001, usually the first weekend in May, the Kalamalka Flyfishers Society has hosted the Polson Park Pond Free Kids Fishing Weekend. With the help of the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC who generously provide about 1,000 catchable Rainbow Trout, kids up to the age of 14 have an opportunity to go fishing and actually catch fish. We provide all the fishing gear, rods, reels, hooks, bait and bobbers, including some sage advice on how to catch a trout. If they prefer, they can use their own fishing gear. The kids love this event almost as much as the members.

It was a gorgeous weekend out a Salmon Lake Resort for our annual club fish out. Close to 40 members camped and attended. This year is the 40th anniversary of the club so we celebrated with some cake and had a founding member, Warren Burgess, cut the cake. A great time was had by all and there was some great fishing for sure.

The men at KFF join for many reasons. Some to learn, some to contribute, some to socialize, some watch, some of attend occasionally, and then there's those that are hardcore fisherman and help supply the club with much needed intel. I think Harold joined for most of the above. 2 degrees, raining, and still out there trying to catch fish. 😀

2025 KFF Fall BBQ is a time to celebrate and socialize. Fishing stories and future fishing adventures were shared I'm sure, and the food was top notch. Thanks to everyone who contributed, organized, served, and participated. Perhaps this is the official fall flyfishing kickoff for good fortune? 😀

Well fall fly fishing is officially here with 64 degree water temps at this higher up lake. Balanced leeches and chironomids down deep produced a 20+ fish day for Harold and I, and the highlight was this 23.5" blackwater around 5lbs that took him out into this backing a few times. My words before we saw this fish were, "Come on Harold, turn your drag up, what's the matter with your reel, doesn't it have drag?". Ha. If you want to learn how to catch fish like this come on down on a Monday night and check the club out.😀
