🏘More and more older adults are staying in their homes longer due to a lack of downsizing options, high moving costs, and a desire to stay in their homes as they age.

With 53% of Canadians living in single detached homes, some older adults may be living in homes too large, potentially leading to social isolation.

The Housing Solutions Lab explores three housing solutions to tackle this challenge and save money:

1️⃣ Home sharing: Renting out a room to a tenant. This is the cheapest option but offers less privacy.

2️⃣ Secondary suites: Creating a separate apartment in your house. This provides more privacy but requires more upfront costs.

3️⃣ Coach houses: Building a small dwelling on your property. This offers the most privacy but is the most expensive option.

Which option would be the best fit for you or a loved one? Explore these creative solutions for aging at home.

🎥 Housing Solutions Lab webinar recording now available!

Check out our recent webinar recording for a glimpse into what a home provider and home seeker matchmaking program would look like along with the challenges and solutions for housing options such as home sharing, secondary suites and coach houses.

🗣️ "Many older adults we spoke with are seeking connected communities where they can age and maintain their networks. They want to see multigenerational communities where they can easily access transit and feel connected to their neighbours.”

These housing solutions can allow older adults to age in place longer and provide much needed additional units to the housing market. While these solutions may not be the silver bullet for the housing crisis, they are opportunities to address aspects of the polycrises we are facing – affordability, aging population, climate change and the housing crisis.

Thank you to United Way British Columbia and United Way BC’s Seniors Housing Working Group for sponsoring this session.

Social isolation, housing affordability and climate change are growing issues across Canada. Despite interest in renting out secondary suites or home sharing, many older adults hesitate for various reasons.

This past year, we collaborated with Hollyburn Society to launch the Housing Solutions Lab, engaging with older adults, community members, municipal staff and service providers on Vancouver’s North Shore to identify barriers and solutions for these interconnected issues.

We hope you join us to discuss challenges and solutions for housing options from the perspectives of older adults, service providers and municipalities.
