This story was shared with us from an Unplugged Canada parent:

A question was asked in my 8-year-old daughter’s class:

“If you could change one thing at home, school, or in your community… what would it be?”

She and her friend raised their hands together.
They had been reading The Amazing Generation… and their answer surprised everyone:

👉 “We think kids should wait until 16 to have smartphones and social media”

At first, the reaction was exactly what you’d expect:
“Why would you do that?”
“I already have a phone.”

But instead of backing down… they leaned in.
After class, they asked their teacher: “Can we do a presentation on what we’ve been learning from The Amazing Generation?”

She said yes.

For the next two weeks, they worked together—turning ideas from the book into something they could share with their classmates.

They stood in front of their class and explained:
• How apps are designed to be addictive
• How too much time on apps impacts their brain.
• How much time gets taken away from real life
• And the idea of the “Rebel’s Code”:

✨ Use technology as a tool. Don’t let technology use you.
✨ Fill your life with REAL freedom, REAL friendships and REAL fun.

And something really interesting happened.
Hands went up:
“My parents took away my phone and now I'm more energetic and have more fun!.”
“I have less time on my ipad now.”

The conversation changed—not because adults forced it…
But because kids understood it.

That’s what this is about.
👉 Empowering kids with knowledge so they can make their own choices.

The Amazing Generation didn’t just inform them…it empowered them.

Imagine if every classroom read this book and had this kind of conversation.

Delaying smartphones and social media would be so much easier for families.

Education efforts remain strong at Unplugged Canada. It’s indisputable that an enforceable social media age minimum of 16+ is needed.

Yesterday Unplugged founder, Jenny and Ambassador, Josette spoke with a group of grade 4/5 students.

When talking to 9‑ and 10‑year‑olds, it became clear that most were already engaged on these harmful platforms despite the apps’ age requirement of 13.

Education, platform accountability, and a social media age minimum must work together to reverse the trend. Neither one can do it on their own.

The evidence is overwhelming: social media platforms are not built with children’s wellbeing in mind. As provinces explore restrictions, one thing is clear — Canada needs a coordinated national response that protects all kids.

This is about giving young people freedom: freedom from addictive algorithms, from online harms, and from the constant pressures of digital life. We’re urging federal leaders to act now and create consistent protections across the country.

"She would just create and see beauty in almost everything."

Penelope was a gifted artist, a creative soul, and a beloved daughter. Her life was cut short by a digital environment that was never built for children.

Her father, Jason, did everything parents and caregivers are told to do. He monitored her devices, used parenting apps, and took a genuine interest in her digital world. Yet, it wasn't enough to stop a predatory extremist network from entering their home through a screen.

This is why Unplugged Canada is clear: This goes beyond parenting.

We cannot "parent" our way out of a crisis fueled by addictive algorithms and predatory networks.

We need the Canadian government to prioritize child wellbeing. Just as we have safety standards and age restrictions for cars and alcohol, we need online safety legislation to address social media with the same layered approach to prevent harm.

To Penelope’s family and friends: we stand with you in your grief. No family should have to endure this, and we carry Penelope’s memory in our hearts as we advocate for a safer future.
