Manufacturing BC We are a coalition of like-minded manufacturing industry associations with a common vision to promot

Founded in the summer of 2014, Manufacturing BC started as a coalition of like-minded manufacturing industry associations with a common vision to promote a world-class manufacturing sector in British Columbia. Today, the Alliance is the province’s largest association of manufacturers. The membership includes companies and organizations in the engineering and design, material handling and logistics

, and fabrication areas. Associate members include people-based organizations that train and develop skilled workers for high-paying jobs and community-focused chambers of commerce and boards of trade that recognize the significant economic contribution to their cities derived from manufacturing, directly and indirectly. Our purpose is to promote dialogue and encourage collaboration and joint-action amongst a variety of industry stakeholders to ensure a strong and competitive manufacturing sector in BC. The Alliance speaks and acts as one voice on priority issues to ensure that all British Columbians continue to benefit from the economic growth, high-value outputs and high-paying jobs found across all types of manufacturing in the province. We work with partners to create and deliver solutions to make industry more competitive. These services include advocacy for policy and regulatory change; skills training and employment programs to fill labour shortages; productivity, innovation and technology programs, and safety.

Starting Feb. 1, 2024, the British Columbia Ministry of Forests is rolling out amendments to the province's lumber regulations. This move aims to revitalize the local forestry industry, especially in manufacturing cedar and cypress lumber in B.C.'s Interior. Key Change: Mills in the Interior are now required to fully manufacture cedar and cypress wood harvested in the area. Expect to see more locally produced veneer, panel products, decking, flooring, moldings, shingles, and siding - a significant shift from exporting minimally processed wood.

The shortage of skilled labor is a significant concern for the manufacturing industry in Canada. This shortage not only affects the industry's ability to compete globally but also hampers technology adoption and digital transformation. The inability to fill vacant skilled positions is a major obstacle for Canadian manufacturers, and it's even more challenging for small and medium-sized businesses that may lack the financial resources and technical expertise required for emerging technologies.

Technology adoption, or the lack thereof, is Canada’s canary in the coal mine. It’s an indicator that something bad is about to happen.

Airbus Canada's CEO, Benoit Schultz, has expressed his bafflement that Canada, with its abundant natural resources, competence in the aerospace industry, and various players in the industry, has not yet become a leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. Despite the country's potential, Canada has yet to commercially produce SAF. In contrast, the US and Europe have embarked on ambitious initiatives to promote the use of SAF. Airbus is actively working to make its planes 100% SAF-compatible by 2030, but the main challenge lies in producing SAF in sufficient volume. Currently, SAF production only meets about 1% of global jet fuel demand, and it is significantly more expensive than traditional jet fuel.

Aerospace giant’s new planes can burn 50 percent SAF but Canada has yet to commercially produce it.
