Clean Energy Canada

Clean Energy Canada One of Canada's leading clean energy think tanks. A program at Simon Fraser University. Wosk Centre for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University.

Clean Energy Canada is a climate and clean energy program within the Morris J. We work to accelerate Canada’s clean energy transition by sharing the story of the global shift to renewable energy, clean technology, and sustainable industries. We conduct original research, convene influential dialogues, inform policy leadership, and drive public engagement. We believe Canada is well-positioned to be

a global clean energy leader today and into the future, but time is of the essence. Which is why we must act now. Put simply, the clean energy transition is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Canada to build a resilient, growing, inclusive economy. Comments are encouraged but must be respectful.

In this week's Clean Energy Review: “Build Canada Strong” may be the mantra, but how we build matters just as much as the what.

🌡️📉 Scientists are scrapping their worst predictions for global warming.
Climate policies, combined with plummeting solar and wind energy costs, have made a high-fossil-fuel future—and the previously estimated worst-case warming of about 4.5 degrees Celsius—now "implausible," according to new research.

While this revision is hopeful news, the planet has already warmed by 1.3°C since pre-industrial levels and is still headed for a dangerous and costly 2.7°C by 2100, based on current emissions trends. This is still far above the "well-below 2°C" nations first agreed to in Paris in 2015.

So, the worst-case scenario is now "less bad" than before, but climate action—including the adoption of clean tech and economy-wide electrification—must continue to accelerate to keep warming within safe levels.

We are still not yet "on a good path," climate modelling expert Detlef van Vuuren told Bloomberg.

🇨🇦💰 The first-of-its-kind program in Quebec will cover about 55% of the costs to buy and install a heat pump, with landlords responsible for the rest.

The measure is expected to cut tenants' electricity bills by 20%—around $250 a year—while bringing cooling to homes currently without any.

🇨🇦🛢️💨 We hope you have a coffee in hand, because last week delivered some pretty significant shifts in the Canadian energy landscape, and the devil, as ever, is in details.

While Thursday saw the release of a welcome plan to double Canada’s electricity supply in line with a net-zero 2050, just 24 hours later, another announcement dropped that immediately undermined this vision.

How the federal government undermined its new electricity strategy just a day after its release, some phenomenal EV sales numbers, and why Vancouver is trying to increase natural gas use

🇨🇦🤝 Today’s agreement between the federal government and Alberta is "a step backward" for both Canada’s economic competitiveness and climate policy.

Not only does it do "too little, too late" on industrial carbon pricing, Canada's most consequential emissions reductions tool, it’s also at odds with Canada’s goal of a net-zero electricity grid by 2050.

🇨🇦📈 Canadian EV sales are headed for a comeback year.

New data from StatsCan shows sales of zero-emission vehicles in March went up 75% over the same month last year—rising to make up nearly one in eight new cars sold (12.2% of all new vehicles sold) nationwide.

Regionally, EV sales increased by a phenomenal 135% in Quebec, 53% in B.C. and the territories (combined data), and 40% in Ontario.

Nearly one in every four (23.5%) new vehicles sold in B.C. were electric.

“The anecdotal evidence that Canadians were increasingly looking to go electric was strong, but today’s numbers are unmistakable," says Joanna Kyriazis.

☀️🔌 New Brunswick has announced its largest solar farm proposal yet: a 340,000-panel project between the North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council and an Irish renewables developer.

If built today, it would be the second largest in Canada and generate enough power for 12,500 homes annually.

The farmers hosting the site also plan to continue using the land for “sheep grazing, blueberry cultivation, and honey production” alongside power generation.

At the end of the day, solar is simply another land use—harnessing something from nature—and it's one that's beneficial to farmers, says Canadian renewables expert Phil McKay.

☀️📈🇨🇦 Global energy markets are undergoing a major reset, despite oil and gas producers’ claims that Canada should prepare for new Asian export markets for fossil fuels. Indeed, 50 countries—including India, Australia, and several EU nations—just recently set all-time Chinese solar import records.

With rising gas prices, Canadians are looking for alternatives.

Searches for used electric vehicles have doubled, and insurance quotes are up 40%.

The reason is simple: driving electric can now save households close to $200 every month, and those savings are growing as gas prices rise.

And unlike gas, those costs aren’t tied to global volatility.
