Today, Mitacs is announcing that First Nations University of Canada will join Mitacs’ network of post-secondary institution partners. This new agreement creates a direct partnership between Mitacs and First Nations University of Canada, advancing Indigenous self-governance in post-secondary research and innovation.

Through the partnership, FNUniv students and researchers will have access to Mitacs programs, including those aligned with our Indigenous Pathways initiative, that connect them with businesses and organizations through post-secondary and postgraduate research internships, collaborative projects, and professional skills development.

Today marks the beginning of a deeper working relationship between two organizations that share a commitment to creating opportunity, advancing innovation, and ensuring that research and talent development deliver meaningful benefits for our communities.

Today, Mitacs and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) signed a new two-year memorandum of understanding focused on turning Saskatchewan research strengths into economic opportunities.

The agreement will connect industry-defined challenges with applied research, specialized talent and commercialization support to help Saskatchewan organizations test and adopt new technologies, improve productivity, attract investment and create skilled career opportunities in the province.

The MOU was signed by Dr. Stephen Lucas, CEO of Mitacs, and Erik Nickel, President and CEO of PTRC, following a roundtable with leaders from Regina’s energy and technology ecosystem, including The Honourable Ken Cheveldayoff, Minister of Advanced Education. The discussion focused on how research partnerships can reduce the cost and risk of innovation, address workforce needs, and move Saskatchewan-developed solutions toward market.

Our collaboration will prioritize enhanced oil recovery; carbon capture, utilization and storage; geothermal energy; compressed air and thermal energy storage; Indigenous engagement; and applied training through PTRC’s Energy Innovation Hub. These are areas where Saskatchewan has the resources, infrastructure and expertise to compete, commercialize new technologies and strengthen its energy supply chain.

The agreement also creates new opportunities through Mitacs’ Indigenous Pathways initiative to support Indigenous-led and community-informed projects, build skills and expand Indigenous participation in Saskatchewan’s energy economy.

Thank you to Erik Nickel, Norm Sacuta, Matt Nasehi (Petroleum Technology Research Centre) and to Cory Gelowitz (SaskPower), Dr. Malcolm Wilson (Videre Energy Ltd.), Guy Lonechild (First Nations Power Authority), Mukarramuddin Mohammed (NGIT Services Inc.), David Akinmade, (Laroye AI), Christopher Yost (University of Regina), and to Minister Ken Cheveldayoff who joined the roundtable. Partnerships like this help translate research capacity into stronger businesses, skilled jobs and long-term economic growth for Saskatchewan.
