Winnipeg brothers Sacha and Sébastien Régnier are racing across the country on season 12 of The Amazing Race Canada. Along the way they've carried Métis sashes in memory of their late grandmother, and both credit their reconnection with Métis heritage as a source of strength.

"At the end of the day, don't be shy to just be who you are… [Even if] you try to do something and you fail, you'll learn so much along the way," said Sébastien.

Nineteen-year-old Ava Roe of the Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement in northern Alberta is one of this year's Miss Indigenous Canada delegates. The first in her immediate family to attend university, Roe is running to bring visibility to northern and Métis youth in a national leadership program for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women and Two Spirit people.

"My main motivation now is representation. Especially being from the north, we don't have much representation," she said.

As wildfires burn across the country, Métis fire scientist Amy Cardinal Christianson argues that Indigenous communities are too often prevented from applying their own deep knowledge of fire management. A Treaty 8 Métis scholar and director of fire stewardship for the Indigenous Leadership Initiative, she says traditional, land-based fire knowledge has been passed over in favour of academic approaches — even as Indigenous communities bear the heaviest impacts.

"Indigenous people are the most impacted by out-of-control fire events in Canada… we need action now," she said.

Margaret Harrison is passing on a cherished Métis fibre-art tradition — rug hooking — that has been handed down through generations of her family in Saskatchewan's Qu'Appelle Valley. In the B.C. Homestead Grant Register, beside a 160-acre parcel in what is now Surrey, someone wrote nine words: "Paid in full scrip No. 8081 for $160." Certificate No. 8081 was issued in 1890 to a Métis man named Zéphirin Morin.

A new article by BCMF Director of Research Joe Desjarlais follows that certificate out of the federal scrip records and into a settler's land title — and shows where the value of money scrip actually went once a claimant sold it. BCMF researchers have now matched 56 parcels, more than 8,700 acres across Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, Mission and Coquitlam, to Métis scrip records. Thousands more acres are still under review.

The records remembered the settlers. This work is putting the Métis people back into the story.

The 56th Back to Batoche Days brought Métis together once again at the Batoche National Historic Site for a powerful celebration of culture, community, and nationhood, complete with the Grand Entry, fiddle music, and Métis dancing. This year's gathering also marked a milestone: the presentation of the Métis Nation Saskatchewan's first-ever President's Medals for lifetime achievement, honouring Elder Joanna Potiyondi and Gerald Morin.

Beyond the celebration, Batoche remains the backdrop for serious conversations about Métis self-government in Saskatchewan. "This is the place where our footprint is deep, where our stories live, and where our nation continues to rise," said Brennan Merasty, MN–S Minister of Self-Determination and Self-Government.

Are you a grandfather? If you are, why not get your grandkids intersted in Michif? You can get started with "J'swii aen pepayr" which is Michif-French for "I am a grandfather". Try introducing Michif to your kids with that phrase.

If you are a grandmother, make sure you check back in a couple of days. :)

You may already know Métis Life — the Roblox game from Maskwa Games, built with support from the Métis National Council, that brings Michif to a new generation of players. Right now it's part of something special: the game is featured in Press Start: A Vancouver Game History Pop-Up at the Museum of Vancouver.

Press Start celebrates British Columbia's place in video game history, and Métis Life has earned its spot among the games on display. It makes for a fun outing for the young gamers in your family — and a chance to see Michif and Métis culture front and centre in a space all about games.
