The Awakening is a fusion opera that explores the resilience and struggles of Chinese Canadians, focusing on their fight for equality and recognition. The Chinese Exclusion Act (1923-1947) barred most forms of Chinese immigration and denied Chinese Canadians fundamental rights, including the ability to vote and to enlist in the Canadian army during WWII. Despite their patriotism, they were denied the opportunity to serve their country. This production raises awareness among young Canadians, as this history is rarely covered in depth in school curricula.
Set in 1939 Vancouver, the narrative centers on the fight for rights by Chinese Canadians and their interactions with William Wesley, a Canadian immigration official. As Wesley engages with Peony, a lead Cantonese opera performer at the Sing Kew Theatre, and the passionate Chinatown community, he begins to recognize the injustices they face. Witnessing their determination, he becomes an advocate for their right to serve, aligning their struggle for justice with Canada’s broader fight for freedom.
This project is especially relevant today, as anti-Asian racism has resurged, particularly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Many Chinatowns, including Vancouver’s, face economic decline, rising crime, and gentrification, threatening their cultural heritage. Through its bilingual storytelling, The Awakening fosters cross-generational and intercultural dialogue, engaging both Chinese Canadian elders, Canadian mainstream and younger audiences to preserve this critical history.
By combining historical education with artistic expression, The Awakening ensures that the contributions and struggles of Chinese Canadians are not forgotten. It serves as a cultural and educational tool, inspiring reflection, celebrating diversity, and deepening the understanding of Canada’s ongoing fight for racial equality.
