The felt sense of interconnectedness is a starting point, not a destination.

Most integration frameworks stop at the individual: your healing, your insight, your growth. But if the experience genuinely revealed something about your embeddedness in the web of life, that has implications beyond your personal healing and growth.

The medicalization of psychedel:cs is scientifically necessary and politically essential. Without it, research would still be foreclosed and thousands of people who found real relief from depression, PTSD, and existential distress would have no legitimate pathway to care.

But frameworks shape what questions get asked.

When the frame is clinical, the central question becomes: does this treatment work? That question is legitimate. What it may not ask is whether we are asking enough of the experience. Or of ourselves.

Sociologist Tehseen Noorani has argued that psychedel:c medicalization tends to reproduce the individualization of the broader psychiatric paradigm — discrete conditions, targeted interventions, outcomes measured at the level of the symptom-free individual. The result is that vast collective questions about the conditions producing distress get bracketed in favor of managing individuals through them.

These compounds emerged from living systems — fungi, cacti, vines — through interspecies relationships far older than any therapeutic protocol. Across cultures and continents, communities that encountered these organisms approached them not as acute interventions but as ongoing, demanding, reciprocal relationships with living beings who had their own character and their own knowledge.

That framing asks a different set of questions entirely.

What does this medicine ask of you — not in the days after a session, but across the arc of a life?

Networks of communication generate feedback loops. When a network is healthy, the consequences of a mistake return to the source, allowing the system to learn, adapt, and self-regulate.

Nature operates on this exact cybernetic principle. It is a vast, interconnected intelligence communicating through mycelial webs and ecological signals.

Historically, naturally occurring psychedelics acted as our cognitive bridge to this system. By quieting the ego, they attuned human consciousness to the broader ecosystem’s feedback.

Prohibition temporarily severed this sensory connection, leaving us disconnected from the planetary network.

The current shift toward remembering these medicines isn’t just about healing individuals. It is about restoring our cultural feedback loops, listening to the ecosystem again, and learning how to align our future with the living world.

The split between science and spirituality feels natural to many today: empirical knowledge on one side, contemplative wisdom on the other. But that division is historically recent and philosophically thin.

Systems science and ecology reveal, in empirical terms, what spiritual traditions have described for millennia. That lifeforms are embedded in relational webs they didn’t create. That what we call “self” is more a process than a fixed thing, more a node in a network than a bounded entity.

Mystical traditions arrived at these insights through direct experience, often mediated by practice, contemplation, or plant/fungi teachers. Systems ecology arrives at them through rigorous observation of living systems.

Nothing about this requires the supernatural. The natural world, understood deeply enough, is super-natural.

Mind isn’t a simple “internal” representation of an “external” reality. It’s a prediction by the brain and body, and what you call “reality” is its best current guess.

The neuroscience here is called predictive processing. Rather than building perception from raw sensory data upward, the brain runs a top-down model of the world, constantly predicting what’s out there and only strongly registering what violates its expectations.

Most of what you experience is the model itself.

This helps explain why two people can inhabit radically different perceptual worlds despite standing in the same environment. Different histories produce different models. Different predictions. Different realities.

It may also help explain certain psychedel-ic states.

Some researchers propose that psychedel-ics temporarily relax high-level predictive models, allowing perception, emotion, and meaning to become less constrained by habitual patterns. The world can suddenly feel more alive, interconnected, novel, or emotionally significant.

From an ecological perspective, this raises an interesting possibility:

What if psychedelics don’t simply change what we see, but how we relate to and make sense of the world around us?

Two practices that changed how I engage with psyched—lics and why I wouldn’t skip either.

Most preparation advice focuses on the external stuff. Set, setting, dose, playlist. That all matters. But the inner preparation, the actual skills for navigating your own mind under these conditions, gets almost no attention.

Meditation builds collectedness, mindfulness, and equanimity (among others, depending on the type you practice). Breathwork builds nervous system regulation and familiarity with altered states. Both are mindfulness practices. Both directly translate to what you need in a trip.

These practices constitute the core of my academic thesis which explores the cognitive aspects of all three and why they work together so well. I’m developing a program about it, so stay tuned via the link in bio and newsletter if curious.

I also work with people one-on-one on exactly this: meditation and breathwork as preparation and integration practices for intentional psyched—lic journeys towards healing.

When I was a teenager, psyched—lics gave me a profound sense of meaning, connection, and aliveness that I had never experienced before, but that I was intuitively seeking.

However, without proper guidance, preparation, support, or understanding, I eventually ventured to far and had full blown psychosis.

A lot of psyched—lic discourse online swings between two extremes:

fear-driven prohibition…

or reckless glorification.

Neither is sufficient.

Psyched—lics are powerful teachers offering experiences that deserve humility, education, responsibility, and care.

A big part of why I created Psygaia was to help contribute to a more grounded, thoughtful, and ecologically rooted conversation around these experiences.

Why ecologically rooted? Because we all—without exception—share one thing in common: Mother Earth. Plus, these medicines are, first and foremost, ecological molecules existing within networks of biological exchange.

For those who are new here… welcome.

Psygaia is an ecological and psychedelic medicine nonprofit organization and community dedicated to rediscovering wholeness (planetary health) in symbiosis (reciprocal participation).

These photos are a glimpse of Psygaia in the last few years: traditional Indigenous ethnobotany and forest-bathing tours (featuring 🍄 microd-sing), ceremony and celebration, merch and alt logo designs (DM if you want to buy a hoodie and support the mission), connection in various forms.

Thought I’d share the stuff that doesn’t fit into the reels.

Some of these are of .fyi — an event we run that began at the conference in 2023. It’s a ceremonial rave, a ritual rave. Opening ceremony with gentle breathwork, meditation, collective prayer, and dyads. Then music, art, movement, connection, etc. It’s alcohol-free and psychedelic-friendly with a harm-reduction crew and all that. Follow .fyi for a reminder of the next one.

Most cultures have had some form of collective ritual for collective self-transcendence. Ceremonial gatherings that effectively disintegrate the isolated self, facilitating a sense of unity and connection between all attendees. Most people today don’t have that. AFTERGLOW is Psygaia’s attempt at a contemporarily relevant version.

The 5 preparation mistakes that make psyched-ic experiences harder, and why most of them are easy to miss because they look like responsible planning.

The preparation conversation has gotten a lot better in recent years. But there are a handful of specific mistakes that still come up consistently. Not from negligence, but from genuinely trying to do it right while rooted in an overly analytical and “heady” culture.

One of the most important part of trip preparation is the mindset brought into it. Taking weeks, or even months to plant and tend to a seed will dramatically influence the journey. These medicines reach deep into the psyche, so plant a seed early on lets it germinate enough to blossom during the actual experience.

The mental health crisis isn’t psychological. It’s civilizational, and it was predictable.

We built a world on the premise that the self ends at the skin. That nature is a backdrop. That what happens inside you is separable from what happens around you. That premise is wrong, and the disconnection we’re experiencing at every scale — personal, social, ecological — is what a civilisation built on that error produces.

The self is relational. It is continuously constituted through participation in living systems that extend far beyond the body. That’s not philosophy. It’s what the science of cognition, ecology, and psychedelics is converging on.

Naturally-occurring psyched—cs didn’t appear by accident. They’ve been around much longer than we have, and we co-evolved with them. And what they reliably do — dissolving the perceptual priors that maintain the illusion of separation — may be exactly what this global moment requires.
