π¨π¦πΊπ¦ Last May, Odesa came to Vancouver to share its culture, to talk about its food, its films, its music, its story, and its people.
Like Vancouver, Odesa is a port city and it had plenty to share. Over 10 days, we brought Odesa to Vancouver's streets: the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra opened Beethoven's Emperor Concert with a special piece dedicated to Odesa Week. We screened films by Odesa Film Studio. We gathered historians, researchers, and journalists to counter Russian propaganda with facts. We revived the spirit of the Odesa Ukrainian Club over wine because Odesa is also famous for its vineyards, while all week, Kozak Restaurant and Please! Beverage Co served Odesa-inspired menus across the city.
And when the week was over, we counted what one city can do for another:
β $5,000 for musical instruments β Art School β21, Odesa (8,345 students)
β $6,000 healing retreat for mothers of fallen soldiers
$740 to Vasylko Music and Drama Theatre β performing in Ukrainian since 1925
β Official Proclamation from Vancouver's Mayor and City Council
β Recognition from the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada
β A thank-you from Odesa City Hall
None of this happened because of us. It happened because of volunteers, sponsors, partners, artists, venues, attendees, and everyone who shared, showed up, or simply believed this mattered.
You are the bridge.
ππ« Yours,
Γ
